Alcoholism Council Urges ‘Booze Tax’

Cape May County officials have tjeen urged to support a proposed state "booxe tax" even though it's been watered down by amendments in Trenton Now known as A3468, the legislation would add a 6 5 to 7.3 percent tax which Richard Woolston of Dennis Township, vice president of the county council on alcoholism, called a M user fee since the people who drink the most will need it most." He said the tax would amount to “15 cents on a quart of Cutty, a nickel on a six pack," but would net an estimated $10 million statewide, of which a little more than $100,000 would come to the county for rehabilitation and education. The council's twomember staff conducts one-on-one consultations, educational programs at schools, in-service training at hospitals, and intervention programs for employers as "a alternative to firing someone", Woolston explained. "You’ve spent a lot to train a person,” he said. “Rehabilitate him and you’ll have a much better employe than hiring and training a new one. It's good; sound business practice.”
