(ED NOTE. This is the second 's a series of articles by First Call for Help, a division of fhe United Way of Cape May County, explaining human service agencies. First Ca/I. at 729-2255. can refer persons to the appropriate agency to meet their needs.) This week we spotlight Contact/Atlantic, a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week telephone counseling scr vice which Cape May County residents can reach by calling 398-6668 The purpose of the Contact telephone ministty is to repond to the expressed needs of callers and by active listening, befriending and referral to those who call find wholeness, independence and happiness CONTACT HAS a secon dary purpose as well: to provide opportunities for lay people to develop personal skills and put faith to work in meeting real human needs The Contact
phone workers are volunteers who do not claim to be able to "solve” every problem nor to "answer" every question. They are not attempting to take the place of any professional person or commurtity service agency They recognize their limitations and offer something unique. What’s offered is friendship by telephone 24 hours a day. The anonymous telephone worker's response is personcentered in accordance with the expressed needs of the callers. They impose nothing, and do not take callers beyond the point that they are ready to go. This befriending ministry is important and useful to per sons in crisis. Contact is the third in the network of personal telephone service which makes up the 24-hour, 7-days-a-week First Call for Help.
