r Jersey Cape NATURALLY ONE OF TWO PARTS Throughout the salt marshes of southern New Jersey, large colonies of the mud fiddler crab (Uca pugnax) conduct their daily business largely unseen beneath the sea of waving cordgrass. Scuttling quickly into their burrows at the first sign of an intruder, the fiddler is likely to be noted as only a furtive shadow by the casual marsh visitor. The 62 known species of fiddler crabs are common inhabitants of salt marshes and mud flats in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. The mud fiddler and its close relatives the sand fiddler (Uca pugilator) and the brackish-water fiddler (Uca minax) range from Cape Cod to Texas. Close examination is required to differentiate the three species, but a good indicator is the location at which they are found. The brackish-water fiddler is usually found in estuaries where there is fresh water input, such as a river mouth, and the opening of its burrow' is usually above the high tide line. The mud and sand fiddlers are found in and around the salt marches and their burrows are intertidal. The sand fiddler prefers sandy areas while the mud fiddler 1 is found on the mud flats among the marsh grasses, although populations sometimes overlap. Fiddlers are true crabs, similar in appearance to their larger and more familiar relatives, the blue crabs Their most distinctive feature is the large claw of the male. Either the right or left claw may be enlarged and it is used in ritualized combat and courtship displays. The female fiddler has two small claws about equal in size. Adult males and females are about the same size — the body width ranges from about one inch in the mud and sand fiddlers to one and one-half inches in the brackish-water fiddler. The burrows are L-shaped, unbranched excavations that may be up to two feet in depth. The material excavated from the burrow is carried to the surface and deposited as small balls surrounding the ' entrance. At high tide, the fiddler lies secure in his burrow, having plugged the entrance with mud or sand. When the ebbing tide uncovers the burrow, the fiddler emerges to feed and court The burrow also serves as a winter retreat in which the fiddler lies dormant during the cold months (Continued next week) TEXT AND ILLUSTRATION BY WALT FORSTER FOR THE WETLANDS INSTITUTE.
