Anyone who watches TV and reads papers knows that center Island Wildwood has had major problems with the police department under previous regimes However, this may be the brightest, hap piest news your scribe has been able to report in decades as to island business prospects, the general welfare and civil rights As you know, there are loLs of new faces in City Hall An ex stale policeman with an impec cable record has been selected to head the police force This impartial observer believes that his rejuvenated police force •may well be a model the rest of America would do well to emulate A MODERATE common sensical approach is much in evidence — no more “over-reaction to trivia!" People and property are well protected, but a sen sitivity to the special pro-*

blems that beset a resort engenders a restraint that we believe will make complaints of harassment a rarity. All of which isn't to say that anything goes, but the visitor and native can be assured that civil rights are protected rather than impinged upon here!! Hunt s Theatres, would you believe it? The Academy awards are coming to Wildwood. A brace of bonifaces have acquired Delaney's Tavern and are re-naming it Oscar's in tribute to the movie award statuette The new owners are ex-New Yorkers, Shalmar Motel owners Mario and Lorraine Rlundi, Mary Dalo and Crest realtor Tom Haynes. An

RIO GRANDE MALE (mil to K Mull RIO GRANDE. N.J.

Hallett, recently profiled in a Herald-Lantern feature by Bob Shllet, has just completed a new movie for PBS-TV. It is “Pudd ’n Head Wilson,a Mark Twain epic dating back to 1874. Hallett just finished the movie in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. His co-star is Ken Howard of TV's "White Shadow”. In a local visit, Howard confided he landed the series because he was the only white player on a championship Manhassett, L I high school basketball team. What may well be a national treasure that is unsung and unnoticed hangs in the entrance hall of North Wildwood's Margaret Mace Junior High School. At the very least, casual observers feel it is of great intrinsic value. It is the Declaration of Independence carved on wood measuring approximately 16 feet by seven. It was the gift of Henry H. Oltens millionaire real estate broker and developer of North Wildwood, who passed away in 1932 The masterwork in an immense frame was created by a French craftsman. There arc only two like it in the world and the exact whereabouts of the other is unknown, other than somewhere in France The fram' 1 is inlaid with thousands of hand-shaped pieces of wood, some as small as a half-inch, mat ching and contrasting in color to form designs. The words are carved on white pine treated with a coat of black paint. It boggles the mind to guess how long it must have taken the. French craftsman to complete the masterpiece Two members of the first graduating class at Mace Jr High' recall the dedica tion of the Ottens gift They are Dominic Plro and Mrs. Bud Craven, the former Pat Kline. Piro recalled parties that Ottens gave for children at his mansion on 18th and Surf Avenues, now the site of Club 18. Piro recalls there were bowling alleys in the basement, a

gameroom, a solarium, Persian nigs and antiques galore. IN ONE OF the last great family resorts, Wildwood powers-that-be continually come up with ideas to nurture that image. Tom Parsons, of the Motel Association, reveals they are buying up tens of thousands of "Tot Tags”. These are water and tamperproof wrist bracelets, almost as hard to remove as hospital bracelets. When families register, the motel owner gives these free to the kids They are inscribed with the child's name, room number, motel and address. Long time bartender Jim Holmes will be a boniface this season, operating the County Library Lounge as part of Bert Thame's Manor complex. J.C. Lane and Linda Lee are the talent, and the bartenders include Vince Scanlon, Micky Longshore and Marlin McMasters. Many folks think Jim is a double for local movie comic Mickey Shaughnessy. Comedian Dave Michaels, long time star for Sylvan Rosenfeld at Hurricane East, is back from a Canadian and Florida tour He’s starring at the Hof Brau for Senior Citizen groups Your “Variety" scribe rates Dave as one of the three top impressionists with Rich Little and Fred Travelena. Entertainers are back from all over the globe From California and Las Vegas. Bryan Marshall and his Fantasy Follies are at Mark Vito's Club Casba to entertain the Senior Citizens. They open their brand new production July 1 at Joe Grassi's Fun Spot in West Wildwood. Don't say we didn't tell you that a long time Freeholder will be retiring and his replacement will be an ex-Crest Mayor. Crest song writer Ed Deane has written a song, “Smile.
