- Jersey Cape NATURALLY - Part Two of Two Fiddler crabs can be observed in many salt marshes in southern New Jersey. Look for the telltale burrow openings in the mud among the cord grass. A few moments of quiet standing will generally be rewarded with the sight of several fiddlers resuming their activities. Fiddlers feed primarily on bacteria, microscopic i'

ing marsh plants. They are in turn preyed upon by larger crabs, fish, terrapins and birds and thus serve as an important link in the food cycle of the marsh, bridging the gap between the sun-fed plants and the higher animal consumers. The fiddler scoops up mud and debris with the claws and inserts the material into its mouth. Food particles are sorted out of the mass and the remainder is spit out in the form of round pellets similar to, but smaller than, the burrow pellets. Male fiddlers cannot use the large claw for feeding so they must feed twice as long as the females in order to consumer the same amount of food. Fiddlers normally feed close to their burrows and the males will

defend their home territory against other males by engaging in ritualized combat. The large claw is held as a shield and the battle takes the form of a pushing contest. Unless the intruder is much larger, he will rarely displace the resident fiddler. Fiddlers that are unable to find their home burrow for some reason will readily occupy any vacant burrow they happen across. In addition to feeding, the most important thing in a fiddler's life is mating. Male fiddlers attract females by rapping the ground with the elbow of the large claw or by rapid tapping of the walking legs which produces a series of vibrations that the female can detect by means of special organs in her legs from a distance of up to a meter away. The male then entices the female by engaging in a "dance,” posturing his body and waving his large claw in a specific pattern which varies with the species. If the female approaches, the male will back into his burrow, rapping to coax the female to join him. At night, the male uses rapping alone to attract his mate. Mating takes place in the burrow and the female will remain there until the eggs natch. Text and Illustrations by Walt Forster for the Wetlands Institute.
