Mews Notes from-

The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis

For the first time in eons, you won't have to go to Stone Harbor, Cape May or Court House to see 4th of July fireworks. Wildwood will have a 45-minute oceanfront display on the holiday night. Bravo! Lovely Lisa of the Russo clan will conduct the free aerobic beach health classes in the Crest. The tourism council, according to spokesman Bill Huf, will also have a free dockside fishing clinic conducted by

Bud Carlson.

Wildwood Elks will sponsor Canada* vs. U.S.A. fisticuffs on a boxing night July 25 at Convention Hall NEIL'S WAS the scene of a surprise banquet for William ••Bud" Dry. secretary-treasurer of Hunt’s Enterprises for 50 years. with bands Dry booked for Wildwood and he engaged folks like Dick Clark to host season long record hops. It would take an encyclopedia to list his contributions to „ the Hunt's and the island. The world renowned Cannes Film Festival in France gave a very high award rating to the movie about Wildwood Boardwalk life, Touched, which stars Kathleen Beller of TV’s Dynasty; Robert Hays and

Ned Beatty.

The very noticeable Hispanic influx on the island is attributed in part to the jact that the Newark/rjew Jersey area is a logical port of entry for Puerto Ricans. New York is the only state with a larger Puerto Rican population than Jersey. Lou Rodia, the county tub-thumper, says mail inquiries from Canada are up 30 to 40 percent from last year Tom Parsons, major domo with our motel association, reports a 20 percent increase in Canadian inquiries Robert Patterson of the county c. of c. also expects many more Canadians than the past

two seasons

Patterson talked to Adirondacks tourism officials who said Canadians were flooding across the border because their infla lion is much worse than ours so the U S A again looks like a travel bargain to our northern neighbors Wildwood bears the happy brunt of the Canadian invasion because of our beaches

and night life

Mrs. Gene McGough of Wildwood has been signed for an engagement in the Claridge Casino Her stage name is Gloria Dee and she sang with Esquival in Vegas and appeared for years with Reno's top lounge act, the Matys Brothers. We gave her her first “Variety'' revue at the Bolero with musician Paul Lowden. who now owns a chain of Vegas hotels. RED BUTTONS spent a month in Wildwood entertaining Senior Citizens for Mike Balensen of the Grand Hotel and Golden Eagle However, he just took time out to be star

comedian of the Friars roast of Elizabeth Taylor at the Waldorf Astoria. The Friars Foundation is the charitable arm of the theatrical club. Seats cost as much as $1,000 Dinah Shore was the first female mistress of ceremonies in Friar's “Entertainer of the Year" history. Frank Sinatra gifted Taylor with a watch studded with diamonds. Joan Rivers, although not present, was flogged unmercifully by speakers like Ruddy Haskett and Rod McKuen. It seems Ms. Rivers chops up Taylor on her “Tonight” show TV

appearances.

OUR ISLAND is a study in contrasts. We are the most popular college resort north of Lauderdale, but we are also the St, Petersburg of the North. One quarter of the county populations is now over 60 We may have only, plastic palm trees but we now rank as the third fastest growing county in the U.S.A. in elderly population. New Yorkers seem to lead the influx. On a Boardwalk bench, we overheard one oldster saying, “We moved here because the sun seems warmer, the water sweeter and the air better! ” Ann Zahora, of the county offic on aging, dislikes stereotypes of older adults as being inactive and beset with problems. Ms Zahora says they are pleasant, willing to cooperate and volunteer, and relatively content Our county's 22,379 older adults represent 27.2 per cent of the county and the numbers grow annually. Older folks now shun Ocean City and Atlantic Couhty due to the skyrocketing costs accompanying the casinos and increased crime. However. Ocean County is also booming
