"The ocean waters from Ocean City south to Cape MAy Point are beautiful." Cape May County Public Health Coordinator Louis Lamanna said Monday. Lamanna entered the fray after days of bickering about the quality of water in bathing beaches off Cape May and the Wildwoods prompted by a June 8 front page story in the Atlantic City Press. That paper on Wednesday reported Wildwood’s beaches were "tainted." On Thursday it reported they weren't really a problem. Ahd this Monday it reported Cape May’s

beaches are a problem. too Each of the stories had a banner headline. But all its statistics came from a year-old state compilation of bacterial contamination conducted by the county Health Department. And Lamanna said the state report was "flawed." "We have the most up-to--date water quality information of anybody in the state," said Lamanna "The state’s report did not include all the information. Therein lies the problem." IT ALL STARTED Mon day, June 6, when Cape May City Manager Fred Coldren rrtade public the state report in order to show that city’s beaches were acceptable. But the Atlantic City Press also reported that Coldren "pointed out" Wildwood had nine "unacceptable" sites. Wildwood officials howled like a swimmer who has just stepped on a crab. Sunday night, the Cape May Chamber of Commerce executive board met with Coldren to express its "dissatisfaction" at how the issue was "mishandled," according to chamber president Bob Mullock "We thought it brought unnecessary attention at this very sensitive time for tourism," Mullock said. MULLOCK SAID the chamber felt the city had had enough bad news — "parking meters, pooper scoopers, beach tag fees — knocking the good news off

the front page ' Coldren said the Atlantic City Press "attributed some remarks to me out of context It was not what I intended. Anyone knows I did not and would not say anything negative about our dear friends in the Wildwoods." Coldren said the chamber would know that if it had attended the June 6 council meeting, "but it failed to do so." Lamanna and Coldren agreed that the beaches are testing just fine this year. "Ocean water quality tests results are excellent for 1983," said a Coldren memo. "There are no prospects for beach closings and the City of Cape May 'will continue to monitor ocean water quality close ly. We will continue to do everything and anything necessary to provide the cleanest, safest and most wholesome environment for all to enjoy." Ballengcr Gets State Position AVALON — Borough Environmental Commission Chairman Yvonne S Ballenger has been elected a trustee of the Association of New Jersey En-viron-mental Commissioners. Mrs Ballenger has held the Avalon Post since 1976 and has been secretary of its planning board since 1971.
