Area tracksters did quite well at the NJSIAA Track and Field competition held recently. Tim Saddler of Middle Township finished second in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 10.7 and 21.7 seconds, respectively. Paul Koch of Wildwood Catholic captured the Parochial B title in the 1600 meters by nearly five seconds over the second place finisher. Ocean City’s Mike Stockley won the Group II shot put event with a 57 foot 10 inch toss. Other area boys finishing well were Jim Flukey in the javelin and Eugene Watts in the high jump. Both are from Ocean City. RAIN HELPED Ocean City's girls softball team advance to the finals of South Jersey competition against Bridgeton, but the perfect season came to an end in the final against Mammonton In the Group III semifinal. mother nature stepped in after O.C had built up a 5-1 lead against Bridgeton and the game was shortened, giving the Raisers their 19th straight win However Hammonton pitcher Jen Horner did not allow a runner to third base as the Cherokees downed the Cape Atlantic II Champs 6 to 0. Ocean City's boys baseball team found the going a bit rougher last week. First the O.C squad was eliminated from South Jersey action as Absegami pounded the Red Raiders 15-8. In make-up games, Lower Cape May came up with three runs in the seventh as the Capers squeaked past O.C. 5 to 3. Sean Brennen knocked in two runs for the winners. Tim Champion and Roy Tymball lead the way for Middle Township as the Panthers also defeated the Ocean City team 7-3 Champion drove in two and Tymball scattered seven hits to pick up the win At the Diamond Classic in Erma, Bob Chadwick struck out 11 as Lower Cape May downed Williamstown2 to 1. L.C.M scored both runs in the first on singles by Lee Ander son. Sean Brennen, and Russ Coombs and a ground out by Phil Boyd Looking back on league play and the area's best hit-

ters, four schools put players near the top. Tom Kent of Wildwood led the way with 30 hits and a .455 average. Other leaders included Middle’s Tim Champion at .439, Joe Piro of WW Catholic at .438, Wildwood's Bill Osborn at .424 and Lower's Phil Boyd finished at a .417 clip. TRIVIi) TIME: Who was the last pitcher to collect a hit in a major league allstar game? Answer later. • • • IT WAS TWO in a row for Ocean City’s golf team. The Red Raiders captured their second consecutive CAL II title with a 145-155 win over Hammonton. Henry Weigal and Marc Bohen each carded a 36 to lead O.C. which finished the season at 15 and 1. Lower Cape May's Beth McCullough was named th6 most valuable player at Salem Community College in softball. The 1982 grad played third base and hit 469 for the season Ocean City’s Seventh Street beach was the site of the latest NSSA New Jersey Surfing Competi tion. Stockton State College student Joe Grottola of Wildwood came up the win ner after finishing second the last two years Mitch Leonard of Ocean City repeated in the kneeboard event MARKERS: Time for some fun To keep with the light spirit of this column. Steelman Asks G>aching Aid

SEA ISLE CITY - According to Chip Steelman, city recreation director, the summer athletic program is in desperate need of volunteer coaching help. Applicants can contact Steelman at the Raffa Community Center on J.F Kennedy Blvd The Summer Men's Basketball registration is taking place 10 a.m.-4 p.m daily at the beach tag office. There is a registration fee with a deadline for signing on July 14, Steelman said. June 30 is the deadline for the Summer Adult Soft-

week — two of the game's best vying for the all-time strikeout record Philadelphia's Carlton and Houston's Nolan Ryan, four K's apart, will go at it until one of them decides to call it quits. Nothing is more fun than to follow an ongoing effort to make the record books Remember Pete Rose's long hitting streak? As in Pete's case, the chase usually involves just one player, but here we have two active players setting a new standard each week.

I think Carlton will eventually come out the winner because "Lefty" seems to get stronger as the years go by. Carlton struck out more batter per nine innings (8.6) since 1980 than he had in his first 15 big league seasons (7.4). Carlton holds the record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game with 19 and is capable of doing that every day Ryan, with poor control, is not. Like fine wine, which the Phillies lefthander collects, Steve Carlton gets better with age.
