Old House Tour Slated July 8-10

Workshop Hosts Poet

A Writer’s Workshop will be held 8 p.m. tomorrow featuring John Brown, poet and teacher at County Art League's Carriage House Gallery, 1050 Washington St. Brown teaches creative writing at Community Art center. Wallingford. Pa; teaches French at the Cardinal O'Hara High School He is a specialist in Oriental studies at Naropa, Boulder. Col., where poets Alan Ginsburg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti are teachers.

COURT HOUSE - A Historic Cape May County weekend is the theme of the 35th Annual Old House Tour of historic homes, public buildings and chur ches, which will start Fri day. July 8, with a special program at the Art League. 1050 Washington St.. Cape May. and continue through Saturday. July 9. and Sunday. June 10. Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 a m. - 4 p.m.

Homes, churches and public buildings will be opened in Upper, Dennis and Middle Townships on Saturday, and in Cape May and surrounding area on Sunday. They represent nearly 250 years of county living, from the time of the early settlers to the pre sent, and they illustrate both rural and resort life SEVEN OF the 40 buildings on the tour will be opened for the first time Two are in Court House, the seat of county govern ment, and were built by founders of this attractive tree-shaded community Also to be seen will be a large house in the historic district of Cape May. the National Landmark City Newly restored, it is an ex ample of the shingle style that appeared in Cape May in the late Victorian period. A contemporary home will be featured for contrast with traditional styles Hexagon-shaped, it overlooks the Cape May Canal in Lower Township A special feature this year will be a quilt display and quilt-making demonstration at a Dennisville home Saturday. A special event at the League on Friday night, July 8, will highlight the tour, when New Jersey historian Jack Boucher will talk on “From Privies to Palaces" in connection with the pictorial exhibit of New Jersey's historic buildings in the gallery, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Historic American Building Survey. THE TOUR is self conducted, but on Saturday, July 9, the League will have bus transportation, by reservation, for a day-long trip over the tour route.
