County Seeks $500,000 Boro Lists Protected Beaches

To Aid Fishing Industry

By E.J. DUFFY COURT HOUSE - Cape May County officials are asking the state Department of Community Affairs for $500,000 in federal rhoney so the county can establish a revolving loan fund to aid the commercial fishing industry Some 60-70 state communities are competing for $5.6 million in state administered Small Cities grants, but Steward Tweed, county marine agent, said he thinks the county’s ’’in pretty good

shape" to collect a share of the money. “I’ve heard from state people that they’re very much interested in suppor ting this," he added, referring to the revolving loan fund. The county freeholders approved an application for the grant during their last meeting County planner James Smith is drafting that application to submit* before DCA’s July 31 deadline The county, he said, will be notified if the grant is approved after Sept. 30.

IF THE GRANT is ap proved, Tweed explained, the $500,000 would be administered through the county Economic Development Commission Loans of $50,000 or less would be authorized to commercial fishing operations for the purchase of new equipment The Small Cities money is appropriated, to the state from the federal Depart men! of Housing and Urban Development Although HUD s past funding priorities have been toward housing projects, that cm phasis changed last year toward projects that stimulate industry and create jobs. Because of the change in emphasis and the fact that the DCA recently approved a similar revolving loan fund for commercial fishing in Ocean Couhty, Tweed is optimistic about the county’s bid for the grant. "This isn’t a new industry we re trying to create," he concluded "This industry is viable."
