Cottage Tours, Films Start

CAPE MAY - Two new events began in the city this week. Starting Monday, "Cottage at Twilight” tours, opened four of the most charming Victorian homes to the public. The two-hour tours run from 8 to 10 p.m. every Monday through Labor Day Weekend. Since Tuesday, vintage films are being shown in the auditorium of Victorian

Towers on Washington Street for a $2.50 admission. The Cottage at Twilight tour include. THE PAUL M ANDRUS HOUSE. 223 Perry St., a gothic revival cottage, has a front section dating from 1856 and a much older rear wing. Its interior has been furnished in antiques that span the range of Victorian styles.

THE GIBSON HOUSE,. 45 Jackson St., a mansard style residence, was built circa 1865. Its interior features a chestnut staircase, original stained glass, and an extensive collection of wicker. THE HILDRETH COT TAGE, 665 Hughes St., built circa 1840 as a summer cottage, graces the entrance to the oldest resident street in Cape May. THE DR HENRY L HUNT HOUSE, 209 Con gress Place, was built in 1881. It is one of the more eclectic Victorian creations in town, containing elements from most of the styles popular in thd 1870s and '80s. CAPE MAY Starting Wednesday, July 6, Man sions by Gaslight tours will open four of the city's Victorian landmarks to the general public Sponsored by the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), these tours of the interiors of authentically restored vintage homes, each representing a different form of architecture and planning, offer an in timate insight into Victorian lifestyles Mansions bt Gaslight runs 8 to 10 pm every Wednesday, from July 6 through mid-September Each tour takes about two hours Houses open on the tour include The Emlen Physick House (1048 Washington St.) is a noted Victorian house museum and the headquarters of the MidAilanlic Center for the Arts Tickets for the tours should be purchased here The Abbey (Columbia Ave and Gurney St ), built in 1869 for a Pennsylvania coal baron, is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival architecture. It features a 60-foot tower, etched, ruby glass windows, and some of the most elegant formal rooms in town. The Mainstay Inn (635 Columbia Ave.) was built in 1872 as a posh gentlemen's gambling club. It is a classic example of the Italianate style, with 14-foot ceilings and wraparound verandas. The Wilbraham Mansion (133 Myrtle Ave.) began as a simple country far mhouse built in 1840 It was expanded and Victorianized in 1900 by the wealthy Wilbraham industrial family from Philadelphia to become the massive structure ity is today. Its many rooms are filled with outstanding Victorian furnishings.
