CAPE MAY COUNTY MAGAZINE 29 JUNE '83
38 - ‘ ^_- 7 _ ■ Jersey Cape NATURALLY > The one essential experience of summer along the shore is strolling the beach in search of sea shells. No matter how often we've done it before, picking up shells seems to be an uncontrollable impulse Whether we keep them, or toss the shells back onto the sand, our inspection is usually accompanied by the remark "oh, that’s a clam"‘or a snail or a conch. All of the creatures which make shells are known as moilusks. With such animals as insects and crabs, moilusks share the amazing hahit of wearing their insides on the outside. So, what you actually have in your hand is not the clam at all, only its external skeleton
The real live creature encased in the shell was a soft bodied mass with a brain, a mouth and a stomach, a foot and sometimes even a fringe of blue eyes (as in the scallops).
The soft inner body was enclosed in a delicate envelope of flesh called he mantle It is the mantle which forms the skeleton or shell from calciUm and other minerals taken from food and sea water. While the animal itself may have long since been eaten by a . scavenging gull or crab, it has obligingly left behind a reminder of its existance — a sea shell — bright souvenir of the shore and tourist's treasure Text by Joan Galli For The Wetlands Institute Illustration by Paul Stewart V—/
