Grant Aids Wetlands Festival

COURT HOUSE - A state grant to help promote the fall “New Jersey Wings ‘n Water Festival" headquartered at the Wetlands Institute has been awarded to Middle Township. One of only ten grants in the entire state available for tourism and announced by Commerce Commissioner Borden Putnam, the Middle Township grant of $2,000 will be entirely mat

ched by funds from the Wetlands Institute. The award will include assistance to promote "New Jersey & You: Perfect Together," the new state slogan introduced this spring by Victoria Schmidt, director of the Division of Travel and Tourism. The fall festival will serve as a benefit event for the institute. TOWNSHIP GRANTS

Coordinator Barbara Beitel explained that the annual festival Sept 17-lfl will boost income to the merchants of the township at an off-season period of the year The only cost to Middle Township will be bookkeeping, she said. Beitel serves as board member for the Middle Township Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Wetlands Institute Board. "We are continuing to work on creation of the events for this new state festival, which will include activities to celebrate the natural attractions of our Southern Shore region in both Cape May and Cumberland Counties. I am concentrating on Court House activities." said Beitel. The two-day festival will include New Jersey wildlife art and carving competitions and shows, a sculpture show, a major state historical exhibit, guided beach and nature walks, museum demonstrations and displays, fishing and boating exhibits and sales, seafood, migratory birdwatching and more. The Wetlands Institute is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, admission free, Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Jersey Cape Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament will sponsor a Third Annual Hiroshima Commemorative Peace March in Ocean City Saturday, Aug. 6, with six South Jersey counties being represented.
