15 Athletes Rush to Regionals
SEA ISLE CITY - More than 20 young athletes participated in the recent preliminary competition of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games. 15 of them advanced to the Regional Championships to be held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, July 9. Meet Director Lewis Steelman supervised the event, which was sponsored by Atlantic Richfield Co. and coordinated here by the Sea Isle City Recreation Department. Steelman reported a record participation this year, a fact he attributes to a rising interest in track and field events because of the 1984 Olympic Games scheduled
in Los Angeles next summer. First, second and third place finishers at last Saturday’s Games were rewarded with ribboned medallions. Those placing first and second have an opportunity to qualify for a place on the team that will represent Philadelphia at the ARCO Jesse Owens Games National Championships to take place in Los Angeles (home of the 1984 Olympics) August 13. Although the games are designed for novice-level athletes, the local youngsters will be treated more like Olympians as they vie for places on the national team at the
