County Library by Kathleen Duffy

When warm weather arrives my thoughts turn to the great outdoors, hiking, camping, and flowers but listening to the staff chatter at the library, made me feel like the odd man out -- Baseball is the major theme of conversation. The Phillies, Steinbrenner, batting averages and such dominate. Whole sentences seem to be filled with a jumble of meaningless words and numbers; but if you are a baseball fan who likes to get the inside information to fill in the gaps not touted or only alluded to by the sportscasters — the library has more than a hundred titles in the sports section devoted to the sport that Babe Ruth made famous The Rules and Lore of Baseball by Rich Marazzi (796.357 M > is flavored with first-hand accounts by the umpires involved in con troversial decisions along with a fascinating study of baseball's rules and the ways they have been broken in baseball's history An entertaining yet fundamental book for all players and fans on our national pastime BEHIND THE scenes fanatics who revel in "politics'' will enjoy The Imperfect Diamond by Lee lyowenfish and Tony Lupien. which chronicles the story of baseball’s reserve system and the men who fought to change it, or perhaps The Lords of Baseball by Harold Parrott, which is a funny and irreverent look behind the scenes to witness the zany and bumblehcaded antics of the so-called businessmen who own the major league clubs. Heywood Hale Broun s book. Tumultuous Merriment. is an amusing anecdote-filled and serious look at the world of contem pory sports, while John Dizikes' Sportsmen and

Games men analyzes American ideas of winning, losing and how to play the game while conversing; virtually all sports take the scientific viewpoint. Fan history buffs will enjoy: A Baseball Century; The First 100 Years of the National League; Baseball for the Love of It; Hall of Famers Tell It Lihe It Is by Anthony J. Connor; The Great No'-Hitters by Glenn Dickey; Baseball's 10 Greatest Teams by Donald Honig; Baseball When the Grass was Real by Donald Honig; October Heroes by Donald Honig; and Vanhee Stadium, 50 Years of Drama by Joseph Durso. For Phillies Fans — The Philadelphia Phillies. A Pictorial History by Allen Leivis. Yankee fans can settle down with And On The Eighth Day God Created the Yankees Nostalgia fans will enjoy Some Are Called Clowns by Bill He ward, which chronicles a season with the last great barnstorming baseball teams, or perhaps Invisible Men. Life in Baseball's Negro Leagues by Donn Ragosin The newest crop of sports books to enter the librar> include: The Red Smith Reader, a selection of 128 columns of the country's best sports writer on the key sporting events of our time; Sieinbrenner's Yankees, an inside account by Ed Linn; How Life Im itates the World Series by Thomas Boswell; The Comeback Kids, The Philadelphia Phillies and the 1980 Woidd Series by Bob Ibach anf The Umpire Strikes Bath by Ron Luciano. f Not to mention all those sports biographies and books filled with batting, hitting and walking averages, games scores and other numerical infor motion to end all those heated arguments!
