COURT HOUSE - A volunteer chaplain program has been established at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital Thirtythree clergymen from throughout the county have offered their services to provide a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week service. The recently organized group is spearheaded by Rev Wilbert S. Hoffman of the First United Methodist Church. Court House “We all visited our own parishioners at the hospital." ho relates, "but 1 became increasingly burdened by the thought that many county visitors and other persons without local church affiliations were not receiving pastoral care." Father John P. Ward of Our Lady of Angels Church in Court House has been serving as hospital chaplain to the Roman Catholic community for approximately 10 years, but other faiths did not have regular representation Rev Hoffman's call for a cooperative voluntary pnr gram was positively received throughout the hospital community The time was right, he feels ".. BTMH supplied us with key personnel to act as liaison, a place to hold our meetings, secretarial assistance, and a tern porary station for the chaplain of the day." he said. A new and enlarged chapel and a chaplain's office will be included in the new hospital building scheduled to open in January 1!W4 LOCAL CLERGYMEN, representing the Jewish community, the Roman Catholic community, and Protestant denominations were enthusiastic about the proposed program More than 30 responded to the call for an organizational meeting last February and 29 committed themselves to regular service on a rotating schedule Fr Ward and Fr Jones of Our Lady of Angels are contmu ing their established pro gram as is Rabbi Seymour Atlas of Beth Judah Temple, Wildwood Others have agreed to respond when needed Chaplains of the day serve for 24 hours, approx imatelyAonce a month They are^n the hospital for - a minimum of four hours and remain on call for the remainder of the day and night Additionally they at tend bimonthly meetings to discuss problems and progress A chaplaincy counp^l. elected by the group and headed by Pastor Hoffman, meets more frequently to decide on issues of immediate concern The Council also clears any printed material to be distributed within the hospital With a little over three months experience, the most gratifying results of the program are to be found in the positive response of individual patients, according to Pastor Hoffman

CHAPLAINS OF THE DAY are identified with a special pin. While he was on duty, Hoffman recalls being stopped by a patient who saw his ID and confided that he was "desperate for someone to talk to " Rev Hoffman spent several hours with the man and his family. "They had difficult decisions to make and I was able to assist simply by acting as a sympathetic sounding board " Thoughv the priests, ministers, and rabbis have all been trained in pastoral care, the chaplain's group has recognized an extra benefit to be gained from sharpening their sensitivi ty to the special needs of the hospital community Therefore, they have also begun a program of continuing education Active members of the hospital chaplaincy program include: Fr John Ward and Fr Peter J Jones, Our Lady of the Angela, Rev.
