Locals Would Get Prison Jobs

TRENTON - State senators gave final approval last week to a bill, sponsored by Sen. James Hurley, R-Cumberland, Cape May, that would give Cumberland and Cape May County residents priority for new jobs at Leesburg State Prison. The state has been constructing two prefabricated medium

security prisons at Leesburg to house BOO inmates. One prison is scheduled to open July 13 and the other later this year. Hurley said: "State corrections officials estimate that 718 new employees will be needed to staff the new facilities. Under my bill, which now goes to Governor Kean for his signature,

first priority for these jobs will be given to the residents of Maurice River, where the prison is located Second in line for these jobs will be Cumberland County residents, followed by Cape May County residents. ■'Cape May and Cumberland County have the top two highest unemployment rates m the state. The number of unemployed residents in these counties is far above the statewide average," Hurley said "With so many residents in the Cumberland/Cape May area out of work, the state should have no problem finding qualified local residents to fill these muchneeded jobs." All new employees at the prison must meet Civil Service requirements
