One of the simple pleasures of the shore is watching the sandpipers running along the beach Their little legs are a blur of action as they rush up the sand just ahead of the surf only to reverse direction and rush ^ down the beach as the water re ceeds We may find these actions enter taming Such behavior is serious business to the birds, which are actually feeding As they chase the receeding surf, they pause to probe the sand for tiny organisms which are easiest to gather when the sand is soft and moist The variety of foodstuff hidden in the soft sand is amazing Scientists studying this feeding behavior take small plugs of sand from the beach where the birds were feeding Using a special strainer, they sift awav the sand
