String Band Seeks Help
Although his first band, Ceneration X, didn’t leave much of an impression on American record buyers, Killy Idol is now a genuine star here in the States. “Dancing With Myself," "Hot In The City," and most recently "White Wedding," have provided him the hits Idol needed to attract a massive following. His new album on Chrysalis is a consistent, well-balanced selection of taut, melodic rockers. His rough and ready vocals are the perfect contrast to the catchy tunes This music is perfectly designed for radio and there are a couple of other .potential hits waiting to bd taken from this album. Rick Derringer and Carmine Appice have been on the rock scene since the mid-sixties, playing with big groups, legends, and fronting their own outfits. Now they’ve joined forces in DNA and their minialbum Party Tested • Boardwalk) promises some great things in their future. This is modern sounding, mainstream rock. By using guitar synthesizers, Derringer's playing sounds overwhelm ingly powerful. Add to that the fine drumming of Carmine Appice and one knows this group is going to be musically fit However, a couple of the tracks are mediocre in structure, so the group has to sharpen its songwriting chops a bit. They can do jt. though, as the lead off cut. "Doctors Of The Universe," could easily be a hit with its infectious chorus. DNA are worth keeping an eye on Nobody makes covfboy music like Cenr Autry or Roy Rogers you say? Well, check out the excellent Riders In The Sky’s Prairie Serenade (Rounder, 186 Willow Ave.. Somerville, Mass 02144) This trio might not be for everyone, but those who cherish "B"
Talent
Winners
SOMERS PT - The Talent America preliminary for New Jersey (south) was held June 28 at the "Med " in Somers Point. Several area students competed and earned high honors Kim Glenn of Wildwood Crest was winner in the youth vocals competition. John Rodriguez of the Villas took the winner's trophy in youth tap dance, while Steve Galman. also of the Villas, took first runner-up in youth tap. Michelle Moore of Wildwood took first place in the youth jazz division. She and Rodriguez also competed in duo novelty and took the winning cup. All of these winners will continue on to the finals competition in New York City during July Talent America has been respon sible for the beginnings of such careers as Kristian Joy Alfonso, "Hope" in Days of Our Lives, and Jane Homer in a feature role in "Jaws III"
westerns will find their versions of "I Ride An Old Paint," "Old El Paso.” and "Down The Trail To San Antone" to be charming. In this day of synthesizers it’s nice to be able to sit down and listen to these simple, carefree songs of an earlier time. I hope the Riders In The Sky will be recording for quite sometime. We need more music like those.
WILDWOOD - The Wildwood String Band, which will be marching in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade Jan. I, is seeking financial help and musically talented members.
