CAPE MAY - Judy Bartrlla and Anne l^e Due. two school teachers, have purchased the 107-year-old Chalfonte Hotel, the 107 year-old resort hotel at 307 Howard St. Bartella and Le Due have been co-managers of the hotel since 1976 when the previous owner, Mrs. Calvin Satterfield, an nounced that after 40 years of running it she was ready lo retire The hotel has been in the Satterfield family since 1910 when it was bought from the original owner When the new owners took over as managers of the hotel they created unique plans for its gradual restoration. Work weekends were initiated, providing an opportunity for friends and patrons to have weekends at the seashore in return for six
hours of daily refurbishing in the field of their choice Another innovative idea included inviting architectural students from several universities to participate in ‘hands on” preservation University of Maryland students have recently completed their fourth annual School of Architecture summer preservation workshop for which they earned three credits University of Pennsylvania and George Washington University students have been involved in the past. two-year-old. She has a BS degree in psychology and education from Rollins College and earned a masters' degree in philosophy and social sciences from Columbia University, Teachers' College. Bartella is a Swarthmore College graduate with a degree in fine arts. She taught art history, ceramics and painting at The George School prior to going into advertising. She was first introduced to The Chalfonte in 1974 when she started working there "full time in summers and part time in winters ” She is also a "practicing potter" and does photography The new owners plan to continue their slow renova tion, redoing a* least 10 rooms each year, and maintaining the upkeep of the 106-room building, con sidered one of the finest ex amples of Victorian 1 ar chitecture in the country "This is a love affair with a hotel," lx* Due com mented "It is Victorian within We do not want to give the impression we are a modern motel "
Only a few rooms have private baths but nearly all of them have a wash basin. There are no telephones, televisions or air ■ conditioners in the rooms The crisp curtains at the windows are con tinuously blowing from seashore breezes and the facilities are down the hall Despite the lack of amenities. The Chalfonte continues to attract a near capacity crowd during its summer operation, May 30 September 11 Many of the guests are second- and third generations of the same families who,have made The Chalfonte a way of life.
