Your liver is a complex organ which is essential to human life. For the next several weeks we will focus upon the functions of the liver, and the signs, symp toms and prevention of liver disease. The liver is your largest internal organ, about the size of a football It is located on the right side of your body behind the lower ribs. The liver is the blood and chemical refinery for the body It is where iron is stored Immune factors to help the body resist infection are produced in the liver, and it is able to act as a filter to catch and destroy some harmful forms of bacteria. Proteins to make up our cells are manufactured in the liver which can be broken down into energy when we need it. The liver is also a storage tank for many vitamins, minerals and sugars. Bile, the essentia I digestive juice, is made in the liver and then stored in the gall bladder. Cholesterol production is controlled by the liver. Hormone balances are maintanined by the liver. It also regulates the storing of fat and its movement through the body BECAUSE OF its role as a refinery, the liver purifies the blood of waste products and contaminants. Alcohol can only be handled in our body by the liver's special way of breaking down its com ponents so it can be digested. Many of the medicines we take can do their job only after being processed in the liver Even the ability of our blood to clot is controlled
