Today Is Crab Day
OCEAN CITY - Today is the day of the Miss Crustacean Pageant, the city’s attempt to unearth the most comely crab in existence. The annual World’s Championship Hermit Crab Races follow the pageant. The excitement takes place on the 12th St. Beach, long a hermit crab shrine, at 1 p.m. It was on this very
beach that “Hermie,” a crab from Atlantfc City, set the world’s record over the 3-foot oval race track at 6.5 seconds. A former Miss New Jersey, Laurie Berchtold Kohr, is head judge for the beauty pageant, and will award the coveted Cucumber Rind Cup, a loving cup with a cucumber stuck inside.

COURT HOUSE - The County Historical Society has announced the first of three mini-lectures to be presented this autumn in the lower level of the County Library, Mechanic St. Anthony Butler will speak 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, on the “Indians of New Jersey." Butler has been the director of the Bridgeton Library for the past 13 years. He is also the director of the George J. Woodruff Museum, which features Indian artifacts and relics of the LenniLenape. Tickets may be purchasBike Parade Prize List AVALON - As part of the Third Annual Sportsweekend, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce there was a parade. Youngsters rode in the parade on decorated bikes and were judged for beauty and originality. The Recreation Department sponsored the "decorated bike” parade and awarded prizes to the youngsters: Winners in the various age categories were: 3 to 7 years — First, Christine Jenkins and Murray Jones; Most Original — Mike Ternowsky and Andrea Leonard; 8-year-olds — First, Karen Wosniewaski; Most Original — Chris Lamb; 8-13 years — First, Kim Wosniewaski; Most Original — Tommy Lamb.

Poet Dunn In Reading CAPE MAY - The Cape Writers’ Coop will sponsor a reading by poet Stephen Dunn 7:30 p.m., Sunday at the Carriage House on the Physick Estate, 1050 Washington St. Dunn, who teaches writing at Stockton State College, is the author of five books of poetry, including Work and Imv* and, his most recent, A Cirru* of Needa. ‘Tennis-Ball’ Saturday
CAPE MAY - The Cape May Tennis Center will hold its fourth annual Tennis Ball at Convention Hall on the Promenade 9 p.m-1 a m., Saturday. The theme of the dance is "A Victorian Caper." The event will feature music by the Serenaders, a nine-piece band playing music enjoyable to all ages and for all dancing styles. Tickets are available at the William J. Moore Ten ; n i s Center, P0 2 0 Washington St.. (884-8986) or from members of the club, at a price of $12.50 per person or $25 per couple. Tickets may also be pur chased at the door that evening. The proceeds will be used to benefit the capital improvement program of the tennis center.
