Federation with prizes donated by local businesses. Racing will begin at 10 a.m. with the Junior Class with five races to follow. Grande’s Bar moved closer to third place in Cape May County softball play recently with a big win over Kona Sports, the third place team. George Harry, Joe Bimbo and Denny Olsen led the way for Grandes. - In other action, the Coast Guard Mariners defeated McDonald’s 8 to 0 as Scott Beauregard collect two hits and two RBIs. Doc’s clinched the American division of the league with a 8-4 win over The Press. Steve Bianco and Andy Szigeti led the way for the division winners. IN THE WILDWOOD Restaurant league, Pizza Hut ouLsIugged Urie’s 17 to 10. Earlier, Urie’s downed AC Express in a close ballgame 4 to 3. In other games, AC Express beat The Lobster Shack 19 to 8 and The Captain’s Table handed Zaberer’s its first loss of the season by a score of 19 to 9. Floyd Shelton scored 29

points to help Jade East Motel hold on to first place in the Avalon Men’s Basketball circuit and a 91-79 win over Keating Printing. Dennis Kennedy led Keating with 26 markers. Windrift’s Steve Grozinski scored 37 points, but the Drift still fell short to Donnelly's Deli 89-86. Jay Cleveland hit two pressure free-throws late to seal Leahy Realty’s first win of the season, a 93-92 win over the Surf Shop. Cleveland also took scoring honors with 30 points. TRIVIA ANSWER: Buddy Bell, playing for Texas in 1979, had 200 hits in 670 at-bats. That’s a .29851 average. MARKERS: Time to have some fun. Boy it sure was good to see Lefty Steve Carlton back in form recently. The Phils continue to play just well enough to hang in there. Joe (play me every day) Lefebve is hitting well over .330 since coming to Philadelphia. Did you get a chance to see Jack Nicklaus challenge Hall Sutton for the PGA Championship? Sutton wouldn’t fold with the Golden Bear

Avalon Wins Tri-Resort

AVALON - The Avalon Beach Patrol showed its championship form with a strong win in the Tri Resort Lifeguard Races last week. The event, which features Avalon, Sea Isle and Stone Harbor, has been held since the late 1940's. Avalon won the event with an overall score of 28 followed by Sea Isle with 16 and Stone Harbor with 1. The event was split into two days due to thunderstorms the first evening. Avalon seemed to be in good shape to defend its South Jersey crown

tomorrow.

Avalon built an early lead on a sweep in the doubles boat race, a second and third in the long swim and a first and second in the singles' row. Sea Isle finished strong the second evening with a first and third in the iron man event and a first place in the five-man surf dash. Dan and Steve O’Malley started the event with a win in the 1-1/2 mile doubles

Sieck of Avalon and Peter Pfeiffer of Stone Harbor. The iron man relay, which includes a swimmer, runner and rower was won by Sea Isle's team of Rich McEIwee (swim) Pete Moran (run) and Bob Clifford (row). Avalon team of Ed Flory (swim). Pat Moran (run) and Jim Ronan (row) took second. Sea Isle’s team of Brian Bowen (swim), Steve Gallagher (run), and Chris McCann (row) placed third. In the final event, a fiveman surf dash, Sea Isle’s team of Chuck Horton, Greg Horton, Rich McEIwee, Rich Holmes and Brian Bower won. Second place honors went to Avalon's Andrew O'Hara, Dave Whitehead, Ed Flory, Greg Murphy and Dan O’Malley. Third place finishers were Avalon's team of Doug Meckelenburg, Bob Gaydos, Bernie Tobin, Doug Myers and Tim Jacobs.

breathing down his neck. What about Carl Lewis at the Track and Field championships in Finland? He just may be the most complete athlete in the entire world. It was nice to see authorities in Canada apologize to Dave Winfield after the Seagull Case. Billy Martin may have been right when he said that Winfield-couldn’t have hit the bird on purpose with the way he’s been throwing this season. REMARKS: The Major League baseball season is turning out to be one of the best in recent years. In two division races, a handful of teams could take the title. In the National League East, Philadelphia has plenty of company, but it seems that no one can get hot enough to pull away. I still like Montreal to end up on top when the entire thing is settled. Over in the Junior Circuit, the East is a five-team thfill. every night they change positions. In this race I still like Baltimore just because of the pitching staff. One final thought on this season so far. The George Brett pine-tar bat and Winfield’s bird bombing can be put together with the great races and you get a lot of fun. If you are a true baseball fan and aren't enjoying it, then you should be tarred and feathered.
