people were present at the special service. Rev. and Mrs. John B. Kirby served in Sea Isle City from 1944-1946 and their daughter JoLu was born there. She had been baptised by her grandfather. Rev. John Kirby Sr. on Aug. 11. 1946. During Rev. Kirby’s years, the sanctuary in the old church at 45th and Landis Avenue, was remodeled. He retired in 1979 but is still serving as pastor of the Fairton United Methodist Church Rev. Kirby remembered his time in Sea Isle as a “very enjoyable experience." He was welcomed with a covered dish luncheon, which was attended by not only members of his new congregation, but also the Catholic priest and the Lutheran minister. When a new Sunday School room was needed, he and another member of his congregation, Leon Reardon, painted a room for the new class. REV. AND MRS. Walter M. Sawn stayed in Sea Isle City, from 1950 -1972. When Rev. Sawn came, the church was part of a circuit with Avalon, and Seaville. However, he still found time to be very active in community and civic endeavors. He was the first editor of the Beacon, a monthly newsletter still being printed. When Rev. Sawn retired in 1972, he was presented with a trailer by his friends and members of the congregation. He is presently living in it in Marmora. Rev. Sawn also has very pleasant memories of this church. In 1957 a building crusade was started by two girls who donated 50 cents for a new sanctuary. It was built on Kennedy Boulevard, and he led the first service in our present church on Dec. 21, 1958. Rev. Sawn shared his appreciation ‘‘of the congregation for the construction of this beautiful church to honor Jesus Christ and win souls to him." He then showed films he had taken during the construction of the sanctuary. Rev. and Mrs. William T. Mann served from 1972 - 1974. An evangelistic outreach program Key 73,

saw all Christians working together. His 1973 Beacon reported some Sea Isle City changes: the building of the Spinnaker condominium on the promenade; the landmark - Cronnecker’s Restaurant - was demolished; and apartments were built next to the church. Rev. Mann retired in 1981, but is still serving in the Sayreville United Methodist Church. He said, "This was the most beautiful church he ever served.'' He remembered beginning hymn sings with Jim Pickering leading, also beginning the stained glass window in the Sunday School room and securing alter frontlets. He especially loved the choir and the beautiful music they provided. REV. AND Mrs. Jerry D. Ruff came to Sea Isle City from Ohio in 1974 and stayed until 1982. It was their first pastorate. Their two children, Stephanie and Steven were born here. Phase I of the building program was started and completed in December. 1982, just before they moved to the Sicklerville United Methodist Church. Rev. and Mrs. Ruff shared some of their "firsts" with us: a choir picnic where they first tasted raw clams and their first time fishing and crabbing (they caught 75 crabs). Some church firsts were a musical premire - In His Presence - with the composer Phil Barfoot flying in from California to conduct the premire; a New Year’s Eve progressive dinner; a special family night featuring a parade of brides with 23 members modeling their wedding gowns; a coffee house for area youth and a lay witness mission when many souls were won to Christ. The current pastor, Rev. Richard W. Nichols, concluded the program. He, his wife and two children came in February. 1983 from Port Republic. Making her first public appearance that evening was five day-old Amanda, the Nichols' daughter. Rev. Nichols said "it was a pleasure to have these pastors and families share with us and see the way God had worked in our church through them." He remarked on the faithfulness of God through all generations and how God leads us through blessings, trials, struggles and victories. "Forward in Faith" is the theme of our building fund and we are beginning Phase II of our expansion. FOUR MINISTER’S WIDOWS Dorothy Comer. Della Bradway, Olive Sullivan, and Bessie McKechnie were remembered Mrs. Brad way's daughter attended the service and brought greetings from her mother who is 99 and blind Both arc living in Wesley Manor. Mrs. McKechnie is still living in Sea Isle City, but could not attend the service due to a recent eye operation. Rev. Nichols closed by reading a report written to the Quarterly Conference by Rev. Franklin Bowen in 1922. In the report, he hoped the church "would spread like a green bay tree and bloom like a rose in the community of Sea Isle City."

The program was planned by the church history committee consisting of Rev. Nichols, Doris Coulter, Vi Rowden and Harriett Reardon. All pastors were presented with ceramic nativity figures and the widows were given violets. Following the program, punch and cookies were served. Church records, dating back to 1882 book, deeds and other items pertaining to our history, were on display in the social hall. A written history of the church has been printed and is available at the Sunday worship services.
