AWAY GOES AUGUST. September’s song is just around the corner. Back to school, back to work. There’s a lull between seasons — once the kids are back in school, the moms usually breathe a sigh of relief.
* * *
The last big weekend of summer is coming up — although summer’s got a few weeks to run before autumn makes its official arrival. The early weeks of September are kind of an off season of its own. It’s a time of quiet waiting. Mornings will be growing cooler, and during the afternoons shadows begin to creep across the beaches as the sand toys are being gattered for the walk home. While summer plays out its final song, this is a good week for taking time to enjoy a scarlet sunset. These are waiting days — waiting for the first cool scouts of autumn to foretell a new season. Oh, it’ll be a week fraught with the frustration of finding just the right school clothes, and many a temper will flare as youngsters try on clothes, in not quite the same colors and sizes as mom would like to see. Such are the ways of growing up ...

During the big weekend, how’s about stepping out and enjoying the local spots. Come on now, you deserve to treat yourself and the family. Here’s a couple of suggestions: SNARKY’S — Homemade Ice Cream I Summertime means ice cream time and Snarky’s Homemade Ice Cream Factory, at Schellenger Avenue on the Wildwood Boardwalk offers 26 original recipe flavors, including all fresh fruit, liquers, and natural ingredients. Even though there are plenty of great ice cream places, we heard about newly opened Snarky’s and made it a point to stop by. We’ve never tasted better. Indulge in homemade ice cream like never before, made right before your eyes. We had a fantastic combination of rich, creamy deliciousness that is going to send us back time after time to this flavorful spot.

ZABERER’S — The King! There never was a restaurant quite like Ed Zaberer’s dining palace in North WiMwood. It combines legendary dining in one of the most interesting settings anywhere. Complete Zaberized dinners are from $7.95 and the monmouth portions surpass your wildest dreams. The decor is strictly out of the past — when lavish attention to detail gave impetus to dining out. Zaberer’s is probably one of the best known restaurants along the shore area and it lives up to the days of Jim Brady to perfection. Enjoy while the doors stay open a few weeks longer!

Cq/e Loren remembers. There was a time when superb Continental food was affordable. It still is at Cafe Loren, at 23rd and Dune Drive, Avalon. In spite of the excellence of the quality here, the Cafe Loren keeps its eye on the
pocket book.
Dinners are served dailyffom 5 to 10, Sunday to Thursday and 5 to ll^PrhlBy and Saturday. Chef Bill Montanari would likeyduto enjoy his many continental touches and would bp'pleased to prepare an exquisite dinner to your, order. <jall for reservations after 3 p.m. — 967-8228.
