Mayer’s Captures Last Playoff Spot

CAPE MAY - Mayer’s Tavern, the Cinderella team of the 1983 American League men’s softball campaign continued the fairy tale as it clinched the final spot for the playoffs in dramatic<fashion. On Monday (1st) Mayer’s edged the U.S.C.G. EECEN 18 to 17. Rich Etiler led the charge going 4 for 4 with 1 rbi’s. Floyd Hughes went 3 for 4 for the victors. On Thursday Mayer’s pulled the upset of the year as it downed regular season champion Doc’s Custard 8 to 5. Frank Chambers and Tom Glansante led the way, both going 3 for 4. Mayer’s then defeated McDonald’s on Wednesday to sew up the 8th and final playoff spot. The Rusty Nail remained in fourth place as it downed Dekelco 6 to 5. Mitch Hand led the charge, going 3 for 3. Randy Scott and Bill Hand chipped in two hits apiece. Doc’s Custard clinched the regular season championship as it downed the A.C. Press 8 to 4. Steve Bianco collected four hits for Doc’s as Mike Reardon played spectacular defense. The Mariners rebounded from their loss to defeat T.M.U. 6 to 2. Lefty Lewis

Panthers, Aces Tied For First STONE HARBOR - With one week to go in the season, the Panthers and Aces remain in a dead heat for the pennant in the Lions Club Little League. On Friday night Ed Hogan, Rob Fisher, Luke Orlando, and Rob Hamilton provided an offensive punch as the Panthers regained a share of first place with a crucial 14-12 victory over the aces. In other league action during the week, the Eagles picked up an 11-6 win over the Wildcats. Kimmel Schaeffer provided the big blow with a towering home run to center field. Blue Devils Are Champs
STONE HARBOR - The boys basketball playoffs were held Aug. 10 determining the final team standings. In game one the Fighting Irish were defeated by the Spartans 34 to 16. Game two was much closer with the Redmen squeaking by the Spartans 28 to 26. The third game decided the league standings, with the Redmen defeating the Fighting Irish 29 to 18
The last game of the night between the Sun Devils and the Blue Devils was for the championship. It was a close game with Blue captain Jim Misurelli contributing 27 points. Sun Devil Vince Sposato tried his best to keep up to Misurelli, but to no avail. The Blue Devils went on to win 57 to 55. The Blue win . entitles them to play against the All-Stars
