County

Library

by Kathleen Dully

An unusual book in a place that specializes in books crossed my desk at the county library the other day; the title — Books That Made A Di//erence; What People Told Us I glanced through and was immediately hooked — this is a fun read. It's about people and books. “It's a dip-in, 10 or 15 minutes at a time book. It is a slice of Americana with anecdotes, joys, tragedies, new careers, self-confidence found, and the drama of lives that books have created or changed. It is not a “ten best" list. The people interviewed included Walter Matthau, Alan Alda, Tony Randall, a beauty parlor manager, a hardware merchant, an Irish cop in New York City, a woman truck driver, Minnie Pearl, Stanely Marcus, Studs Terkel, the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the president of John Hancock's investment adviser’s firm, a hotel doorman, a tugboat skipper and a 101-year-old. THEY ARE all here with the books that made a difference in their lives and each tells why. The differences range all the way from, "they make you feel better" to "it literally saved my life " The books mentioned are fascinating. Most are not "classics” and the stories about the difference they had made outshone any of the books themselves. A Reader, becomes involved: "That book*’ How

in the world could anyon4 name that book? Oh, I’ve read this one. Mmmm She's right — I had the same feeling. "Never heard of this. Wonder where I could get a copy? To think a book could cause all that Some folks are just fascinating." What did they read that made a difference in their lives? Everything from The Intimate Enemy: How to Fight Fair in Love and Marriage by George Robert Bach and Peter Wyden to the Wizard of Or by Frank L. Baum. WHAT DIFFERENCE can a book make?" One man named a book that helped him develop a healthier life style after his heart attack A book comforted a man grieving his mother's death A book bolstered a minister’s moral strenth A book saved a lawyer's sanity and preserved his career A book inspired a young man to become an actor A book helped a woman be more receptive to love Books changed one man's politics and salvaged another from alcoholism A book guided a young mother away from whipping and hollering to talking it out. The power of the written work and how it affects us, is a fascinating topic, I think. I'll be asking some of our local people which books made the biggest difference in their lives

I Diabetes is a common disease in our country currently affecting 5 per cent of the population, with another 5 per cent who have the disease but don’t know it yet This means some 10 million Americans are estimated to have the disorder at present and this numbems expected to double in the next .15 years However, diabetes is an ancient disease Written 'records describing it can be found as far back as 1500 B.C.E. X In the^following weeks Health Watch will focus on presenting information to help diabetics and non diabetics develop a good understanding of the causes, complications and warning signs of diabetes Medical research has made some great strides in treatment, although there is no known cure There are many associated complications, so early detection and treatment are an important part of our preverflive medicine program. IN RECENT years the theories on what precisely causes diabetes have multiplied and there is no longer a single answer It is

generally accepted that a major form of diabetes is that of a chronic disease where there is an insuffi cient amount or total lack

of the hormone insulin

Insulin determines whether glucose will be immediately converted to energy or stored for later use Insulin is produced from cells in the pancreas This form of diabetes is popularly referred to as "insulindependent diabetes;" it used to be calked 'Jeuvenile Diabetes " Although more common in the young, it

can occur in adults The "Maturity Onset

"non-insulin dependent diabetic appears to have, normal or even high levels of insulin, b^t some mechanism interferes with the body's ability to utilize it effectively Obesity is common in adult onset diabetics and it is believed that obesity somehow blocks the body's ability to utilize its insulin This is called "insulin resistence " A THIRD TYPE is called "chemical diabetes " This type is generally picked during blood or glucose tolerance testing and can

be a very temporary disorder caused by stress Frequently chemical diabetes may be seen during pregnancy ^ Diabetes has been demonstrated to run in families. However, it is on* ly in rare genetic situations that it can actually be predicted to occur in a given individual Theories suggest that even with this genetic tendency, one needs to come into contact with either a virus or some other environmental condi tion to actually trigger the

disease

Diabetes has as a llmark of its detection intolerance to car hydrate^ shown by

elevated blood sugars Cer tain cancers can also create this diabetic state, particularly cancers of the liver (hepatomasi. of the pancreas, and steroid producing tumors of the
