By E. J. Duffy ^ COURT HOUSE - Facing telephone bills that could ring anybody’s chimes and the prospect of rate, increases come January, the Cape May County Freeholders are looking for a new way to reach out and touch someone. "Without looking at your phone bill, I know already it’s considerable," Jack Bryson told the freeholders during their caucus meeting last week. Bryson operates Telco II, an Ocean City communications outfit. He was making a pitch to survey the county government’s telephone operations and recommend a better way of making connections. ficult a task, according to Freeholder Gerald Thornton. Currently, the county maintains separate switchboards at the court house complex, tne Crest Haven complex, and at its social services departments in Rio Grande. "We’re going to have to integrate these systems,” he added, complaining about too many outside lines, no restrictions on telephone use, multiple exchange numbers and three operators. "I think 1 it’s worthwhile looking into,” he said of Bryson’s proposed survey. Thorton’s colleagues agreed and gave Bryson the go-ahead. THE COMPLICATIONS with scattered county communications surface at budget time. Instead of paying one phone bill, the county has separate budget items for bills from its various departments. Department and $1,600 for the county Adjustor’s office. So far this year, the county has spent more than $97,000 for telephone service, Philip A. Matalucci, county treasurer, said Friday, and—could wind up spending another $20,000-$30,000 by the end of the year. "It’s a big, big item," said Freeholder Ralph Evans, "and it's something that we have to look at very, very carefully." The county government, he and Thornton noted, not only needs to save on its phone bills by connecting its phone banks, it must also determine which communications firm should overhall the non-system into a system for less and service it in years to come. A reliable outfit is needed, they said. Bryson isn’t the only one interested in the job, Evans added. American Bell has been conducting a survey of the county communications needs.
"We’re looking in all directions to find the right person," Evans concluded.
