Heavy metal has been on the comeback trail this year. New bands have given life to what many thought was a dying genre of rock and right now the charts are full of young, powerhouse heavy metal outfits Two of the best are Def Leppard and Motorhead. With their new album, Pyromania (Mercury) Def Leppard has conquered the States. This young English group has a fine guitar sound and a hard driving rhythm section. Their songwriting shows a melodic side, yet the group • never loses their crisp edge. Def Leppard are very fortunate to have a singer as talented as Joe Elliott, who promises to be a major star. It’s his smooth vocals that perfectly offset the vicious musical attack. With constant airplay and their videos being shown on MTV. Def Leppard are already a major rock band.

JUST 3 MILES WEST OF CAPE MAY MALL ON SUNSET BLVD. "ON THE WAY TO CAPE MAY POINT"

Motorhqad have been slugging it' out longer than Def Leppard and they've yet to make that big of an impression in 'the States. However, this hard working trio isn’t afraid of touring to promote themselves and each new release wins over a few more fans. Another Perfect Day (Mercury) is too fast, raw, and angry to receive much airplay, but Motorhead fans will be pleased with it. Unlike Def Leppard, Motorhead will probably never have a hit single. Vocalist Lemmy’s voice is too rough for program directors’ tame tastes. Motorhead are a fine band that was formed to play rowdy music. They’ve stuck to their guns instead of copping out with an out-, of-place ballad trying for a' hit. Carlene Carter has been plagued with an identity crisis. Her parents, Johnny Cash and June Carter, are country legends, and her husband, Nick Lowe, is the noted rock producer and recording artist. No one seems to know how to label Carlene, as her music shows the strong influences of both her husband and her parents. All of which is too bad, because Carlene Carter is one of the finest singers this writer has heard in years. She’s got a powerful voice, she listens to her fellow musicians, and her material is usually solid — even if it varies between country and rock. C’E»t C Bon (Epic) is another wonderful collection of tracks that will hopefully find an audience for Carlene. This is a major talent waiting to explode, and one can only wish this will be the long player to propel Carlene Carter onto the charts where she certainly belongs.
