GENETIC TOUCH — Jacqueline Tuttle poses In her Stites Avenue garden, Court House, with her well-nurtured hibiscus. She inherited her green thumb from her mother. Claire Campbell, of Ocean View. World's Best Huckleberry Pie— (From Page 22) mouth while I’m selecting the nicest gourmet kind for my pie is FUN! The seeds crack between my teeth and they’re a little bit sour and they shine on their stems and are altogether a delight. You may wonder where I pick these treasures. O.K., I’m not like the folks in that poem by Robert Frost (remember they made all sorts of excuses and wouldn’t share the location of their berries. Who can blame them?) Well, I get mine at Huff’s Mill, the Fire Lane and most anywhere where Pines and Oaks abound. Of course the biggest are near a spung usually, and that means the road to Woodbine from Ocean View. Any natives reading this have their favorite spots for going berrying, I'm sure. And we natives call ’em Huckleberries — not blueberries, just as we call the Pink Lady Slipper (really an Orchid!) a Whip-poor-will-Shoe. O.K., here’s the recipe. Please "go by the book" on this — don't chance spoiling it. By all means make a good crust and don’t roll it paper thin. Be sure it’s at least one-sixteenth of an inch thick so that the slices can be taken out without all coming apart. Now having mixed a cup of sugar, and one heaping tablespoon of flour, spimkle half of that on the bottom ' crust. Next, pour in half of your berries, then sprinkle half of the remaining sugar and flour over them. Put in the rest of the berries and then the last of the sugar-flour. Wait! Don’t put your top crust on until you dot ihe berries with little chunks of butter. Now carefully place your top crust on and make a few holes in it, and bake the best pie you ever ate!! Chill it, of course. Caution: Don’t think you know more than the recipe — the one heaping tablespoonful of flour is sufficient. You’ll see. Our pie is baked and we’ll eat early to-night. We can’t wait!
