CAPE MAY - Still short of enough volunteers to thoroughly patrol the resort, the fledgling Town Watch program signed on more residents and opened two new zones last week, organizer Ron Chatham reported Monday. "We had seven; this gives us nine,” he said of the new patrol zones in the heart of town. wering the additional itory is possible, im added, because 'own Walch ranks increased from Concern
Killed Event AVALON - Safety was the key factor causing the cancellation of a surfing contest slated Aug. 20-21, according to Mayor Rachel Sloan. The Herald and Lantern reported last week that promoter Terry Xughes nixed the 8th annual Duke Surfing Championship because borough officials insisted it be held at 30th Street instead of 10th. Xughes said surfers weren't satisfied with "the quality of the waves" at 30th Street. Mayor Sloan said this week that "serious erosion at 10th Street has left nothing but boulders, pipes and old piling at high tide." Not only was it dangerous for surfers, she said, but the lack of a beach would have made it necessary for spectators to be on the dunes, "which we are trying desperately to preseve." The surfing contest would have drawn several hundred entrants Xughes said.

TRENTONAssemblyman Guy F. Muziani, R-Cape May/Cumberland County, will introduce a bill in the Assembly on Sept. 6, to provide assistance to senior citizens and disabled persons who will be hardest hit by the significant increases in telephone rates resulting from the break-up of local phone companies from the AT&T system. "My bill would provide $30 annually to each person currently eligible for the Life-Line Credit Program, which helps off set the costs of utility bills, and I am proposing the same type of program to off-set higher phone rates", Muziani explained. The Phone-Line Utility Credit Program, created under the Muziani bill, would be funded using $9 million from existing surpluses in the casino fund. Muziani further indicated "An estimated 3,000 citizens and disabled persons in New Jersey would qualify under the program " "A telephone has become a basic necessity in our society. It means the ability to summon medical help quickly and it can be a matter of life or death "
110-120 to 135 since the group organized Aug. 16 and took to the streets with city-donated walkie-talkies three days later. “Everything was realatively quite,’’ Chatham said of surveillance so far. "I think (Towns Watch) has had a great effect on the town." He's looking forward to delivery of 10 more walkie-
talkies and 18 .Town Watch signs in the near future but, what the organization would really like to see, is more resident-volunteers. To cover the entire resort, Chatham noted, 20 zones should be established and patrolled by twice as many Town Watchers as are currently signed up. Volunteers are asked to call Chatham at 884-3358 or 884-5015.
