SEPTEMBER’S SONG is here and this is one of the best months of all at the seashore The fall migration is.getting underway. Get out the old binoculars and take a t?fr to Cape May Point' for a looksee at the birds making stopovers. According to a lot of Experts. Cape May is probably the best spot in the world to watch birds. Thus, it must also be the best spot in the world to watch birdwatchers. Right? Whether you like to watch birds or birdwatchers, or both (or the birds watching the birdwatchers), be sure to take a ride to watch the fall migrations. • • • It's time for harvesting — ever since 'the beginning of agriculture in.the New Stone Age, people have greeted the gathering of crops with feasting and ceremony. The ancient Romans had a festival in honor of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, in August. We still call grain products ‘cereals’ because they were once held to be the gifts of Ceres. Everywhere farmers celebrated both the picking of,the first fruits and the completion of Jhe harvest. There are still these old customs here ahd there. , . • • • Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins tomorrow September 8th and marks a time of family celebration. The month of Tishri is the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar and the first day of this month has been called "the first day of creation." Another theory is that the planting of the new, crop in Palestine or ancient Israel came at that time of the year. • • • No matter what you wnat to celebrate this week, here’s some suggestions of places to go that are worth celebrating in themselves: McGlades' Manions House Restaurant—everything fresh. The bucolic atmosphere of West Cape May enhances the meals on the Mansion House screened porch, overlooking Broadway. (McGlade’s Mansion House is located at Broadway & Sunset Blvd.). Feast on home cooked dinners. The seafood meals are well worth enjoying especially the crabcakes, a regional favorite, made from an old South Jersey recipes. The creamy meaty crabcakes are deep fried. Also recommended is the Shrimp & Crab Delight, a variation of crab imperial that we’ve found to be just about perfect. LA PALMA—great Italian/American food. Good food needn’t cost a lot of money when you eat out. By example, the La Palma Italian/American restaurant, at 2100 Bayshorc Rd., Villas otters a fried seafood combination with choice of two vegetables, plus salad, roll & butter, all for $6-25. The breakfast special includes two eggs cooked any way you like, plus fresh home fried potatoes, toast & coffee, all for only $1 .25a We have enjoyed La Palma's family-like atmosphere many times, always finding a warm welcome to go with the freshly made pasta /all pasta Is cooked to your order), delightful Italian specialties and mouth watering entrees, including broiled spare ribs and beef stew. Avalon's Sidewalk Cafe—exquisite ice cream. Sweet toothers are wild about the Sidewalk Cafe at 26th Street at the Bay. on Avalon's Ocean Drive. What is summer for but to enjoy yummy ice cream all different ways? The Sidewalk Cafe only hantWips Basset's, Barricini, Haagen Daz and other prestige ice creams, then combines them with fresh fruit, or sherbets and yogurts, and garnished with special toppings. The youngsters have been flocking to the Sidewalk Cart* for the E.T. sundae, chocolate peanut swirl ice cream topped with Reese’s (Page 32 Please)
