Full-time Weaving Is Her Goal

COLD SPRING — "I want to be a full time crafts person," explained Wendie Walz from the tiny, roofless porch of the David Taylor yShop where she is basket 'v^eavtr at Historic Cold S^Tthg Village. Before weaving, she worked with clay and did needlework and macrame Sh^ started weaving in 1978 and has been with the Villagfe since its beginning three years ago. A business teacher for nine months -of the year near Medford, Walz says she struggles during the school year to work eight hours and then take her remaining time to make enough baskets to sell in her tiny house at the Village each summer. “I COULDN’T ask for a nicer spot," she grins while working the reeds furiously with her fingers, "but I * really need a benefactor so I can do this full time. Please put the word out." Walz makes long thin weed baskets for displaying dried plants on the walls, decorative baskets, short and long handle brooms, half baskets for wall hanging, egg baskets shaped to have two sides, wind chimes and everyday baskets. She uses round and flat reeds, cane, seagrass, birch, grapevine and mountain vine in her creations. Recently, she has been experimenting . with elderberries for dying basket materials a purpleor brown shade. "If It doesn’t work, I’ll make elderberry wine with the rest of the berries," she laughs. No one would guess, talking to this relaxed, happy young woman, that her first serious priority is basket weaving — for life.
