Report Gives Fans Insider’s View

Wilh the Labor Day holiday now out of the way, summer has unofficially ended. Sportswise, it has been a good summer. Local softball and lifeguard competition provided most of the excitement. Now is the time to look ahead just a bit. Very shortly we will be right back into the school-year and local fans, will once again be out in force enjoying high school activities. I, for one, urge everyone to get out and support all the activities, not just sporting events. One thing that doesn’t end with the closing of the beaches is the baseball season and the race in the National League East is adding to the fun this year. Hey, the Philadelphia Phillies are still in it. If you.do enjoy baseball and the Phils. I have been turned on to a new publication that I put in the can’t miss column. It’s called the Phillies Report and this week marks its third printing. As the first two issues hit the stands, fans bought them at a sell-out pace. The stats are not in yet but, according to Mike McGrath of the Report, many news stands called for more. At the shore, McGrath says they are selling at well over 50 percent. THE REPORT is loaded with information on the Phils/frbra yesterday, today fend ewi. a look at tomorrow. Each' issue, \ \

which comes out bi-weekly during the season and once a month in off season, is a exclusively to seball and is the n ,.paper ever produced. Now about the paper itself. Each issue covtr is a color action photo gf a Phillie in action. That player is the one featured inside in a story loaded with information and written in a highly professional manner. The Phillies Report staff also does a fine job taking you back to yesteryear with stories on players from the past. Jim Running was the first old timer featured in a “Where have you gone" story. The Report also gives fans spme insight on the rest of the National League, including a feature on an opposing player. There is a regular article on Phillies' memorabilia and each issue provides statistics, box scores, trivia quizes and behind the scene articles involving any and everything. THE STAFF of the Report has writers with many years of covering baseball. The stories are top quality reporting on things you just can’t find in a daily paper. Besides the great writing, the REPORT also has a section called “Phillies in Action". It’s a center photo section with pictures of top Phillies’ plays from the past two weeks. This week’s Phillies Report will be on the news stand tomorrow. Promotion director McGrath told me that it will include some special features. The cover will be graced by reliever A! (Mr. T) Holland and the bullpen will be looked at in ( depth. Any one who follows -the Phils would have to agree that the relief pitchers are the main reason the club is still in the race. Tomorrow's Report will include a spread of photos on the Phillies-Dodgers old timers’ game played •recently at the Vet. THE NEW ISSUE will take a look at Harry Anderson, known to long-time fans as the man with the golden swing. The -beginning of September is an important time for top minor league players in any big league organization. Some top players are brought up as the rosters are extended for the pennent drive. These top prospects have a section in th* Report each printing. The Report provides a good look at all the minor league teams as well as

hard to find statistics. A key note McGarth made in our conversation about the report is that the publication is not a fan club newsletter that some teams have. If you pick up a copy, I’m sure you’ll agree that it is a high quality publication. If you want more information on how to recieve the Phillies Report you can write to Phillies Report Box 157, Springfield, Pa. 19064. McGarth says the newspaper is available in Cape May County, so look for it. ( Did you get to see the last ’ two minutes of the Eagles win over San Francisco? It was a reminder that it’s not over’ til it's over. Marion Cambell still must be pleased. Steve Carlton, three games under .500, continues to run into tough luck. John Denny and that bullpen are keeping them in it. Tfje boxing world saw tragedy again last week.

Another fighter died after a bout. He was winning on two cards at the time he was knocked out. Something has to be done to save the sport. World series winner? Baltimore. They have everything it takes and the team is coming together at the right time. Deadline Set TRENTON - Hunters who wish to apply for the special shotgun and muzzleloader permit deer seasons are Reminded that applications must be returned to the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife by Tuesday, Sept. 13, to be eligible for the random drawing for permits. Applications are available from license agents. Those applying are reminded that they must attach the stub marked “Special Deer Season 1983" from their hunting license.
