Doc’s Decks Dekelco in 5

CAPE MAY - Regular season champion Doc’s Custard was pitted against second placed Dekelco in this best of five game series to determine the American League softball champion. On Aug. 24. Dekeldb took a one game lead as they used timely hitting and tough defense to down Doc’s 9 to 6. Doc’s bounced back on Aug. 25, to even things at 1 to 1 as they nipped Dekelco 3 to 2. Steve Bianca was the hero as he drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning with a bas^s loaded single. Dekelco edged Doc’s on Aug. 26, 10 to 9, as Dennis Kelley led the offensive charge going 3 for 3. Dekelco had to weather Doc’s offensive storm in the bottom of the 7th inning as they scored five runs after being down 10 to 4 at the start of the inning. With

the win Aug. 29, Dekelco took a 2 games to 1 lead. On Monday Doc’s battled back to defeat Dekelco 5 to 4 and even the series at 2 games apiece. Frank Dougherty led the way compiling 3 hits. Carl Pettit backed up Dougherty with 2 doubles. Second baseman Mike Riordan and pitcher Dave Olassford pi^served the win for Doc’s with excellent defensive play. In the fifth and final game Carl Pettit of Doc’s got things off to a good start as he launched a two run blast in the first inning. The home run was to be a sign of things to come as Doc’s got its offensive on track to down Dekelco 6 to 1 and capture the American League title. In addition, to Carl Pettit, Art Cannon and Gary Gueracini contributed to the victory with both going 3 for 3. Mike Riordan and Dave Glassford again were spectacular on defense.
