Festival Promises Off-season Delights
A Iwo-day nature festival will kick off on Friday evening, with a special public preview reception and auction at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor. The New Jersey Wings ’n Water Festival on Saturday and Sunday, will feature 32 events to ‘ celebrate the natural attractions of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Shore. Featuring world class decoy and decorative bird carvers with a Saturday show, sale and competition, the festvial will also highlight a wildlifemaritime art show, sale and competition. An outstanding federal duck stamp collection will be on display in the Stone Harbor firehouse while two other buildings will house the blue ribbon carvings and v wildlife art in Stone Harbor on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the same day, the Wetlands Institute, headquarters and beneficiary of the fund raising festival, will hold children's games — a scavenger hunt, fiddler crab races and a kite flying contest; sea chanteys will be sung by Jim Albertson at 1 p.m.; and environmental exhibits will be available under the big top on the premises. Also on Saturday at 2 p.m., an air-and-sea rescue demoastration will be performed by the U.S. Coast Guard in the ocean opposite 96th St. in Stone Harbor and the Coast Guard Band will give a Music of the Sea concert at 3 p.m. at 95th St. On 112th St., the beautiful Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary will be open for visits to the heron rookery. IN COURT HOUSE, one of the ll locations celebrating Wings *n Water events, a Saturday Boat and Fishing Show will be held at the Jamesway Plaza just off Route 9. Jim Albertson will perform < thereat 11 a m and Gerald Lynch will play banjo at 2 p.m. A children’s toy fishing pond will he a feature along with hundreds of prizes and giveaways Environmental exhibits will also be displayed at the plaza. A few blocks away,' a sculpture show by Gerald Lynch willl be held in the old courthouse from 4 to 8 p.m. On Saturday night, there are several choices for the visitor. At 6 p.m.. a Sunset Boat Cruise on the “Miss Avalon" leaves Avalon from 14th and Ocean Drive with refreshments aboard, returning at 7:30 p.m. Only 70 passengers can be accommodated, so reservations are required. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a homecooked seafood dinner with three to four seatings will be served in the Methodist Church at Cape May Court House where the Angelus Chorus will perform at 7 p m. Reservations are advised for the dinner which will be produced by the Middle Township Chamber of Commerce. Also on Saturday, the Historic Hereford Inlet Lighthouse will be open, and in Cape May. the Coast
Guard will offer tours of the U.S.C.G. cutter HORNBEAM and an open house at the training base. Beach, bird and botany walks will be offered at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. On both Saturday and Sunday, the following events are scheduled: Historic Cold Spring Village will demonstrate crafts of the early fishing communities; Learning's Run Botanical Gardens at Swainton will hold guided hummingbird watches at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will also display a reconstructed whalers' log cabin; Wheaton Village in Millville will open its Crafts and Trades Row with exhibits of boatbuilding, fishing, market gunning, trapping and decoy carving; the Cohanzick Zoo at Bridgeton will display live animals; and a Hawk Watch will be held at the State Park next to the Cape May Point Lighthouse. THE WETLANDS INSTITUTE headquarters will display the Maritime New Jersey Historical Exhibit in its lecture hall. Salt Marsh Safaris will begin at the rear of the institute building. Lehigh University will give tours of the laboratories there and show some of the experiments that researchers and scientists are completing while regular attractions of the facility will be open. They include a 70-ft. observation
tower reached via a spiral staircase, a Wetlandia museum, a nature book corner and shop and an information and membership center. On Sunday only, the Lynch Sculpture Show at Cape May Court House will continue from 2 to 6 p.m. and Nature Films will be shown at the county library from 2 to 4 p.m. Wetlands Institute grounds will be the setting for a Wings Chicken Barbeuce from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, and the popular Bird, Beach and Botany tours will be held at 10:30 a m. on the beach beginning at 122 St. In Stone Harbor. The New Jersey Wings 'n Water Festival is a benefit for the Wetlands Institute and museum, a non-profit organization dedicated to research and education. The focus of the institute’s efforts is to create public understanding r of and appreciation for the coastal wetlands of America. The festival was recipient of a small state grant to help promote offseason tourism and the state's new' theme “New Jersey and You — Perfect Together."
