AVALON — The July police report filed by Capt. Robert Weed indicates that the department has conT turned to crack down on noisy tenants, speeders, trash violations and dune
The report shows 71 arrests for noise and 94 speeding violations, six drunk driving and 120 other traffic violations. “Visitors to the borough tend to ignore the 25-mile-per-hour speed limit signs on Dune and Ocean Drives, often using it as a race track,” Weed noted.
Despite the many signs posted throughout the^une areas of the beach people still trespass over tl^l dunes which are thir island's natural barrier against storm erosion, he
said!
The residents and mayor and council are determined to solve the problem of noise in Avalon, caused mostly by group rentals. Before the summer season meetings were held with the local realtors to explain the ordinances concerning noise, and the borough police and council noted
that these ordinances would be enforced and citations given where liecessary. Therefore, there were 71 arrests in
July.

Alcoholisfh In Elderly Targeted COURT HOUSE - Discovery of alcoholism among senior citizens is a primary goal of the Cape May County Council on _ Alcoholism. Recent studies have shown that alcoholisrffe has risen to a fate of 12-13 percent among the elderly, the council says. This is a problem of major proportions, *it adds, because 23 percent # of psychiatric admissions and 18 to-56 percent of medical admissions in persons overfiO were/ound to be alcoholic. The stresses of aging, such as depression, bereavement, retirement, loneliness, marital stress and physical illness were all factors, the council points out. FOR THE ELDERLY, however, there is a major effort to provide radically different treatment from traditional alcoholism treatment, and designed a to ‘treaty the psycho-social stresses of the aged. Early recognition of alcoholism by health care, nursing services and nursing home personnel is sought by the council,^, which is affiliated with Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital. The council provides consultation and educational services for recognition and treatment of alcoholism in the elderly..
