Lighthouse To, Be Open The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, situated in North Wildwood, will be open to the public this Sat. The light, which began operation in May 1874, was moved west by 150 ft. after a severe storm in 1914. In 1964, an automatic iron light tower was built at the site and replaced the old light and its keeper. Boarded up for two decades, the lighthouse was re-opened on a part-time basis this summer through the efforts and donations of concerned citizens led by Mayor Anthony Catanoso and his wife Phyllis. The city of North Wildwood plans to restore the building

Wildlife Star
To Open Show
World Wildlife expert Jim Fowler of the TV show ‘•Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” will assist the Wetlands Institute in its New Jersey Wings ’n Water Festival Sept. 17 and 18. Thirty-two events will take place at 11 locations in Cape May and Cumberland Counties. At the festival, which Fowler hopes to attend if he can complete filming in Africa, a Wild Kingdom exhibit with world maps will be presented under the tent on Saturday at the institute. Fowler, a zoologist whose career interests turned him away from the pro baseball field into science, became internationally known for his capture and study of the South American “Harpy” eagle, largest bird in the world. He was later* invited by Marlin Perkins, the grand old man of television’s nature shows, to join the Wild Kingdom program. AS CO-STAR OF hun dreds of these shows, Jim has become a familiar friend to nature lovrs. He
has made a number of school lectures and public apearances throughout the country with a rare collection of African birds of prey. He has also been a guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, MenGriffin Show and numerous other television programs. He is president of the Fowler Center for Wildlife Education in New York City. He founded his nonprofit organization to create a better understanding of respect for our natural world. One of the Center programs is to develop community "ecoparks” or "wild parks” where native wild animals are displayed in new ways. The Fowler Center is also involved in projects to show man’s relationship to nature and sponsors "Our Living World”, an effective wildlife lecture series for schools. It operates a job placement service for young people who want to work with animals and a data bank to place or rehabilitate orphaned or confiscated wild animals.
Hum Along With Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are summer residents of Learning’s Run Botanical Gardens at Swainton on Route 9 in Cape May County. A Hummingbird watch will be held Sat. and Sun. during the festival. The grounds include a selection of 25 handsome theme gardens on 20 acres of cool, wooded forestland. They display an -English garden, an herb garden, different color themes, a bridal garden, reflecting poo) garden and a fernery. A colonial farm is depicted by a long cabin and outbuildings in the center of the woods. At the end of the garden tour is the cooperage, a turkey red barn featuring driedf flowers available in bulk or already arranged. Colonial designs and other gifts are also offered here. The facility is open daily from 9:30 to 5 p.m. The special guided Hummingbird Watches will be
held on the two days of the festival at 9:30 a m., 11:30 a m.,. 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 pm. "We have resident hummingbirds in the gardens and it is possible to see as many as 5 at once usually in August and September,” says owner Jack April!. "Many Cape May County visitors come here in the mornings and evenings to see the bird life when it is active." Aprill is assisting with the Wetlands benefit festival which received a state grant last month to help promote the slogan "NJ & You - Perfect Together.” A former insurance agent, Aprill is enthusiastic about the festival events. "We think the annual New Jersey Wings ’n Water Festival can be a tremendous benefit to the Wetlands Institute and to our local off-season economy”, he sap.
