To Reveal Secrets t Of Marsh Life

'Secrets of the salt marsh life around the Hereford Inlet will be revealed through guided tours of laboratories at the Wetlands Institute during the New Jersey Wings ’n Water Festival this weekend. Marine scientist Vince Guida has disclosed several current projects that will interest fishermen and waterfront property owners as well as seafood and nature lovers. Guida is on the staff of Lehigh University and is the onpremises director for the Institute each summer. His Lehigh staff will present the fall tours. In the last decade, a five year study of year-round area fishes was completed to show that there are 105 species here at various times of the year, including quite a few tropical visitors in the summertime. The study also reveals what the fishes are eating. A major finding indicates fairly large changes in abundance of fish along the Southern shore region from year to year. More recently, pollution research of sewage in Great Sound immediately horth of the Wetlands Institute shows problems that are affecting feeding habits. Too much sewage is causing a change in plant nutrients which in turn produce non-edible plankton. “We don’t need dead fishes to show dangerous pollution,’’ he warned. “We

know there were once edible oysters abundant right here because the old shells are all over the bottom. The same problem wiped out oyster beds in areas of Long Island Sound." A sedimentation study of the area is currently looking at the accumulation rate in Great Sound and Jenkins Sound where, 50 years ago, sailboats raced. The area is filling up, but Guida has no prediction of when it may become impassable for boats. Two special Lehigh University experiments taking place in California and Florida may change all present dredging systems in the world. A sand fluidization process, which

Historic Cold Spring Village will demonstrate fish drying, oyster shell grinding, which was done by hand in an ingenious contraption, and other maritime crafts such as net mending. The village is a collection of 18th and 19th century early farm buildings with more than 15 crafts people actively practicing their trade. A blacksmith, basket weaver, wood-

is done by shooting water through perforated pipes at ebb tide, forces unwanted sandfill back out to sea. Sand fluidization is far more feasible economical-' ly than dredging. Civil engineers at Lehigh have devised a hydrological model via computer for the Hereford Inlet estuary and are at the Wetlands Institute now to get current strength, timing, depths and other information for their computer. This informatioan can be used via the machine to determine sedimentation and pollution patterns and dangers. The computer will also be able to predict the results of building a jetty in a new locations.

worker, tinsmith, needlecrafter, potter, printer, farmers and others present a working farm community. The village will be open both days of the festival from 10 a m. to fp.m. .
