TRENTO!? - Suggested farmland assessment values for the 1984 tax year, with an increase for Cape May property, have been adopted by the State Farmland Evaluation Advisory Committee, state Secretary • of Agriculture Arthilr R. Brown Jr. says v Brown also serves as committee chairman. The values, set by the committee each year, reflect the productive capability of farmland in each county and are used by local tax assessors to determine tax assessments of eligible farmland. The 1984 values for harvested cropland increased $20 per acre in nine of the state's 21 counties — Cape May, Gloucester, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex and Warren. Values remained unchanged in the other 12 counties. UNDER STATE law, farmland of five acres or more, in agricultural production for at least two years, is eligible for assessment at its productive, rather than market value. However, the farmhouse, bams, and other buildings, and land under the farmhouse are taxed at full market value. If the use is changed to nonagricultural, a rollback tax; based on full market value for the two previous years plus the year in which the change of use occurred, is imposed. The committee will issue *a report this fall listing values for each county. The rep&rt will reach tax assessors in October. The portion of net income originating from farmland is expected to increase moderately in 1984 due to favorable economic circumstances and the federal PIK (Payment-in-Kind) program, according to Dr. A. Robert Coch, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture Economics and Marketing, Cpok College, Rutgers University. “Reduced inflation, a drop in interest rates, reduced input purchases because of land idled under the PIK program, and’ sLablized fertilizer and fuel prices are expected to hold down production expenses for the first time in 30 .years,’’ he said.

Prices of farm commodities should rise > moderately, he said, but

reduction in inventories _will most likely offset some of the anticipated gains.
