16 Teams Vie Area’s Final
Softball Tourney
JUST WHEN you thought it was safe to say softball was over, here comes another Tournament. The September version of the Avalon-Jack’s Place Tourney is slated for Saturday and Sunday with 16 teams taking part. The seven-inning, slow pitch games will be played at the field at 12th and Dune Drive and the Stone Harbor field. First round games get underway at 8 in the morning and a new contest will start every 90
minutes.
THE START OF the school year means a lot of things to a lot of people. To me. it marks the start of the fall sports season, the time of year for football, field hockey and tennis. With tennis already underway, let’s look at this year’s teams locally and see how they shape up under the new league format that takes effect this year. # Laura Mossbrook of Cape May Court House will indeed be the most dominating girls player this fall. Laura, a senior at Holy Spirit in Absecon, is rated the top player in her age group in the MidAtlantic states and certain-
ly in the area.
In the new format for the Cape Atlantic League this
season, Ocean City will play in Division I instead of
II with other Cape May Cdunty schools. Last the O.C. school wei undefeated in girls’ tennis With Ocean City gone fo
CAL I, Sacred Heart should
be the Champ this fall. Wildwood could threaten
with a strong senior
doubles team returning. Lisa Wilson and Jackie Romaine, All-CAL last
season, leads the Warrior
team that finished strong
last season.
Graduation is the main reason Middle Township will nbt charge to the lead this fall. The Panthers lost three singles players and a doubles team with only Lori Collins and Jennifer Snyder returning.

In the Scotty Ireland Tournament, Kramer’s Beverage of Wildwood did Cape May County proud by
conquering the loser’s cket to m
bracket to make the finals. Although losing in the final 20 to 9 against Kissane, Kramer's had a good tourney. On their way to the finals, the Wildwood team outslugged Capri Restaurant 19 to 10 as Chuck Matthews collected five hits. Kramers knocked off the third-place team, Moby Dick, 10-9. Jim Riddle was the hitting star, collecting four safeties in the contest. Riddle was also tabbed as the tourney’s top defensive player. In the final, Kramer’s went out to a 7-0 lead only to sec the eventual champs come roaring back. Kissane outscored Kramer’s 20 to 2 over the last few innings.

THE RESULTS are in from the Avalon Tennis Event held recently. In the men's final, Joe Kramer fought off a hard challenge from Orton Hicks to capture the title 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. In the Semi-finals, Kramer defeated John Sonovan while Hicks downed Gary Van Camp. In the women's bracket, Wathy Delmonte had an easy time of it in the final with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marge Murphy.

I WONDER what will happen with the Prestige Gassic Bike Race now that Atlantic City wouldn’t back it. I was surprised a while back when Wildwood let it go because they didn’t want to spend the time or money to treat the pros like pros. Maybe if they beg we could get it back in Cape May County. From what I hear, there is interest in the race nationwide.

MARKERS: Time to have some fun: Well, the Phillies are still in it and will be till the end. I wonder if someone will win the National League East or everyone will lose except one. One thing for sure, it should be interesting os the only race. As I watched Larry Holmes destroy Scott Frank I wondered out loud that there must be someone in this world that can beat Holmes, but where? As I watched Jimmy Connors volley past Ivan Lendl, I wondered out loud that there is no one anywhere that can top Jimmy when he’s going like that at the U.S. Open. The Eagles lost to the World Champs last Sunday. Big Deal I guess. The world champs are supposed to be the best but this season they are not in the top five. So, the Eagles will have to improve greatly to stay away from the basement.
