Herald & Lantern 14 September/83 State Needs Help In Tracking Eagles

The last pair of eight bald eagles to be released in New Jersey this year flew the coop at 6 a m., Sept. 1. The birds, which were flown in from Manitoba, Canada, were released from their tower in a remote area of Cumberland County and immediately flew but stayed within one mile of the tower. The birds have been tagged and are equipped with radio telemetry equipment whi$h allows tracking of the eagles for a range of five miles. The Manitoba eagles arrived here at about six to eight weeks of age and were placed in specially constructed hacking tower and fed daily by workers from the state Endangered and Nongame Species Program, until they were old enough to fly and fend for themselves. It is hoped that these eagles, along with the others which have been released in the Garden State will return to* New Jersey to nest and raise their own young. NEW JERSEY presently has one pair of nesting bald eagles, and they produced chicks this year for the first time in six years. Of the two chicks hatched in captivity, one was returned to its parents and the other was sent to Pennsylvania to be reared by foster | parents because it was substantially smaller than the other chick and it was feared that it might not survive. Another captive bred

chick of equal size was substituted. These Iwo birds were raised by the mature eagles an(y were successfully fledged in June. Four other eagles,’ here from Nova were successfully fledg< Aug. 10. They stayed within 10 miles of (he lower where they were tracked for nearly two weeks, but then dispersed. Tracking efforts statewide and in Delaware, both from the ground and from the air have proved futile to date. The Division’ of Fish, Game and Wildlife is asking for help from the public in locating . these birds which may still be in the vicinity. It is believed that the birds are alive and well because if they had died they would have been found through use of the radio transmitters they carry. The Division said it is possible that the birds have dispersed to distant points bepond the range of the radio telemetry equipment or that they are in an area where other radio transmissions interfere with the signal from the birds. They have large dark green wing markers bearing numbers one through six. They also have a leg band, either silver or in a color. Any information or sighting of these birds should be reported to the Endangered and Nongame Species Program at 292-9400 or by writing to the program at CN 400, Trenton, New Jersey 08625.
