(From Page56) • Dad's Place in Grassy Sound reports catches of kingfish,. wcakfish and blues are beginning to improve and some fluke are still being caught. GEORGE DUNHAM said Dad's will be open into October. Crabbing has also improved. With the dropp ing fall temperatures, and with the plentiful fish supply, George expects a good fall season. Night hluefish catches are still excellent arbund the Bank buoy, and daytime trolling and night fishing are both producing blues eight to 15 lb. with pool winners topping the 15 lb. class most nights. BILL WEIGLE SR., and BILL WEIGLE JR. of Wildwood Crest boated 66 slammer blues on a recent Royal Flush night trip. They were fishing with MIKE WEIGLE, the skipper, who is the son of Bill Sr. and Bill Jr.’s brother. Night blue catches on the Royal Flush and the Starlight, both of which sail from Wildwood Crest, have been excellent, * with 500 to 600 fish a trip not unusual.
At Wildwood, the Sea
Rail
Raider, the Rainbow and the Adventurer are all reporting fluke catches as the mainstay for their fares on day trips and night trips for blues have been outstanding. Daytime fluke run around two pounds on average, and pool winners are around five pounds. Night blue catches produce 500 fish nights with pools going to fish in the 15 to 18
lb. range.
HUNTING SEASONS: As if football, storm windows and back to school problems didn’t pose
enough competition for the fishermen, a glance at the calendar shows that hun-c ting season is upon us. Rail birds are legal prey right now. Archery deer season starts Oct. 1 and cbntinues . through Nov. 1. Small game season dates are a little more confusing *ln that they open and close according to zones and. the game you want to pursue. Basically, rabbits, quail and pheasants run Nov. 12 to Dec. and Dec. 12 to February 11. Pheasant season closes Jan. 7. There are other variations in the dates, and you should read the 1983-84 summary of hunting and trapping laws now available from licensing agents. The firearms deer season is Dec. 5-10. A special either*sex muzzleloader season (for percussion or flintlock black powder guns) is Dec. 12, L3, 16, 17 and Dec. 19 through 23. An either sex shotgun season is Dec. -14. Winter bow season is Jan. 7-21. Again, make suj*e you know the laws and check. the compendium for all of the little details. As New Jersey builds up with population and* more and more land is lost to development, hunters are being hemmed in and respect for other people's property and safe and sportsmanlike ccrtiduct will help all of us There is a lot of state land open to hunting and-private property Is available with the permission of the owner..Obey the no trespassing signs and be courteous. NEW JERSEY, densely populated as it is, holds more deer today than \n the*

lime of the Indians Hunters can legally harvest six deer in regular and special seasons, as contrasted to Pennsylvania, where the lipiit is only one deer. If you read New Jersey's hunting laws and take advantage of the available seasons, there is plenty of hunting available. Deer hunters should be reminded that deer hides should be saved and turned over to a taxidermist or fur buyer to be used in making buckskin, products. But, one of the most valuable parts of a harvested deer is (he tall—which can be turned into a large number of lead head jigs and teaser rigs for weakfish, fluke and hluefish. Those of you who fish but do not hunt should round up any and all deer tails from hunting-non-fishing pals. We've swapped a few fish dinners for deer tail rights at times.
Big Mac Breaks
Record
A new state record for the Atlantic mackerel has been set by Abe Elkin of tfutley who landed a fourpound, one-ounce fish while abroad Captain John Bogan’s "Shamrock” on the Manasquan Ridge off Point Pleasant, the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife reports.
The fish me asured 22 inches and had a girth of 11 inches. It was caught on 30-pound test line using a diamond ji^with a teaser. Elkin’s mackerel surpasses the old record of three pounds, 10 ounces taken.in the same general area in 1982 by Robert C. Hlavaty, who is the mate aboard the "Shamrock.”
