HUGHES. WHO SERVED as master of ceremonies, lauded Goetz for her “unmeasurable achievements,” and pointed to the many civic organizations she helped to found,' including the Cape Human Resources programs, the Visiting Homemakers, the Ocean City Colony Club, the Little League and DeMolay Auxilliaries and the World War II, 1500 member, British War Relief program. Citing her “personal humanitarianism,” Hughes said, “Frannie has adopted more people than you will ever know. Her home was like a boarding house for so many victims of bad circumstances and whenever you were in Stainton’s, you’d see Frannie there. She was buying a mattress for one person, or shoes for some little children. She even bought one tragic family a bouse."
“Politically,” be said, "she was an outstanding leader, serving as vice chairwoman of the Cape May County Democratic Organization, state committeewoman and as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1961." “She is, as George Plewa, director of JerseyCape said, ‘a totally giving person. If there ever was a Cape May County Pageant for Social Services, I would nominate Frannie Geotz,’ ’’ Hughes added. Former Ocean City Mayor Chester A. Wimberg and Ocean City school Superintendent Michael Subotich both praised the guest of honor for her dedicated work. “When the Ocean City Exchange Club awarded Frannie the Book of Gojden Deeds, we had to add space for all of her humanitarian efforts," Wimberg said.
Convict Cleanup For S.J. Roads?
MILLVILLE — A plan to clean up South Jersey highways by using minimum security prisoners from the Leesburg Prison Complex has been advanced by Sen. James R. Hurley (R- Cape May/Cumberland). Hurley, who is opposed to all forced deposit bottle legislation, says that his convict-clean up plan complements anti-litter legislation which he has
“This program will have a two-fold benefit: it will help clean up and beautify roadways in South Jersey while it will create more productive work for minimum security prisoners,” Hurley said. THE HIGHWAY cleanup jobs for prisoners would not take positions away from the unemployed. Hurley stated. “There are no funds in the budget for these kinds of jobs," said Hurley. “'Hierefore, the only way this work is going to be done will be if state
prisoners do it. “As an additional benefit,” he went on, “recyclables such as glass, aluminum and newsprint collected along the roadways can be saved and sold." A SIMILAR program is operating successfully out of the Annandale Correctional Institution in North Jersey, Hurley said. He added that Gov. Thomas Kean has indicated support for the program, which would call for the cooperation of the state Department of Transportation and Department of Correction. The Leesburg complex has several hundred prisoners, and following completion of current construction, will house more than 1,000. “This program will provide additional productive work for prisoners,” Hurley said, noting that inmates now work at the complex farm, dairy and bakery as well as in the manufacture of license plates.
