Even though most adore make less than $1,000 annually, the thespian bug still bites and gives areas like ours a rich legacy in amateur theatricals. A recent example was the “Good Gals," a musical revue presented by the Wildwood Independent Business Community at Enrico's. Emma Jackson founded the group in 1973 to boost equal rights and give scholarship assistance to young sepia worthies. In addition, it sponsored such events as the spectacular Ebony magazine fashion show at Diamond Beach Playpen The musical revue, “Good Gals," was conceived by Paul Harris with a book by Hovan Check; music and lyrics by Kevin Anderson and production design by Vickie Malandra. The cast included Wildwood' Catholic coed Mary Catstellucci.rTawanda Morris. Joy Johikon and Kevin Anderson, who has made many Broadway and off-Broadway appearances.

The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis

Joe Grotloia Jr. of the Crest is enjoying the advance screenings of "Eddie and the Cruisers," yet another major Hollywood movie Filmed in the wilds of South Jersey. Grot tola has a cameo role and was a stand-in for the film’s star, Tom Berenger. at was made hereabouts in the spring of 1982, but received only a lukewarm review from Variety. Grottola, a skilled surfer, competes in many seaboard surfing contests. LOCALS WELCOME the crackdown on mopeds. The vehicles have made a nightmare out of off-season beach strolls and been involved in many serious accidents both on and off local beaches. The state has ordered tickets be issued to any moped operator without registration, license plates and necessary title. Fines range up to $100. The state recognizes the fine is stiff for 15 and ie-year-olds, but when they do. property damage, it’s difficult to find the culprit. There is also the growing problem of stolen mopeds. Although there are 100,000 mopeds operative in the Garden State, as of last month only 15,000 has been properly titled, registered and plated. The state has no records of moped accidents and fatalities. Also striking fear into the hearts of senior citizens strolling the beaches, once termed “pedestrian heaven,” are the mopeds, actually small motorcycles. They go faster than 25 miles per hour and cost between $300 and $400. Local police think the faster the vehicle, the more dangerous it is, especially when dealing with a young pre-teen driver. TTiey can exceed 50 miles per hour and often do' on local beaches. All moped operators must have a license, registeration card and insurance card in their possession at all times when operating the moped In addition, moving violations committed by moped operators will be assessed points on the same basis as violations committed by other motorists. Even moped operators under 17 will receive points and these will carry- over onto their driving records when they turn 17 and try to get a driver’s license. Those who persist speeding can build up points on their records and may find it difficult to secure a basic driver’s license once they turn 17, according to MV Director Clifford Snedker. Failure to wear a helmet also means a $100 fine. Many residents, especially in the Crest, who were forced to abandon beach walks off season will rejoice over the new crackdown and will form a cadre of informers for local police. In addition to human injuries, many pets have been maimed by the mopeds Locals have their minds boggled over skyrocketing real estate costs on the island. But rival resorts aren’t doing bad, either. Katherine Cornell’s "Barn” estate on Martha’s Vineyard is up for sale; $800,000.

EXPECT AN announcement in the not-too-distant future of the sale of one or two of the Green’s liquor super markets to exPennsylvania Democratic State Sen. Bob Gerhart. Gerhart,- owner of the 14-acre Diamond Beach complex, narrowly missed acquiring the nearby Two Mile Inn. Celebrating another banner season, Gerhart has authorized a major face-lifting to keep the Playpen in the forefront of seaboard night clubs. Building is booming at Diamond Beach with the Grand Hotel set to add an indoor pool, convention hall and 70 more rooms. Since its acquisition by the Balensen family, the Grand has again become a .popular mecca for senior citizens, conventioneers and vacationers. TTie hotel will remain open until at least November. The building received a major face-lifting with new carpets and furnishings. • • • Mayor Earl Ostrander has pledged 100 percent cooperation with the New Jersey Motion Picture Commission in future films planned for Wildwood. Under previous regimes, cooperation with film makers was fair to mediocre. Touched, the Robert Hays movie filmed here last September, added three million to local business coffers before the young producers ran out of money. It was like setting up a light industry with no pollution problems. Ostrander hopes to make Convention Hall an offseason center for filming TV commercials. In addition, one or more films about Mario Lanza will film much of their footage in the Wildwoods under the Ostrander plan. The Lanza children, who still visit the resort, are insisting that films be made on actual locales of their father’s favorite resort. Lanza first sang as an amateur at Russo’s and still has an aunt living here permanently. Here are the productions

in the works with Wildwood certain to benefit financially and publicity-wise; Vet filmmaker Arthur Marx has been tapped to produce a Lanza biography movie with tenor Mario Cas ini and executive producer Tommy Amato, who claim they have raised over five million for the production, in an interview with Variety. Hie scenario includes a run-in with Lucky Luciano in Rome shortly before Lanza’s untimely, mysterious sudden death at 38 in a Rome clinic in 1959. Casini has already recorded an album of Lanza standards. However, Lanza’s four children, still Wildwood boosters, insist on a film in which an actor will mouth Lanza’s real vocals. The children hold 82 percent of Lanza royalties for records and tapes from RCA Victor, so they hope to have a sound track album to enrich their fortunes. His kids own the book, Mario Lanza's Tragic Life, written by his life-long trainer, Terry (It is available at the library and bookstores, and is generously sprinkled with Wildwood beach life photos with Lanza). An Australian film company may back the Wildwood lensing of the tome owned by the Lanza kids, according to Beverly Hills attorney Saul Bernard. Lanza’s children want Kathryn Grayson (exstar at Wildwood’s Manor) to play Lanza's mother in the movie. Even after they moved to Beverly Hills, Lanza's charming mother spent her summers at the family's Rio Grande Avenue manse, opposite Penn Jersey. The Lanza kids call Kathryn Grayson “Aunt Katy.” She befriended them when starring with Mario in films. A telefilm is out of the question - all that knew Lanza agree his dramatic life deserves only the big screen. Paul Sorvino, sought for the lead, refuses to model for Lanza’s dubbed-in voice and says he prefers to do the life of Caruso. Three others seeking io do Lanza films, without family support, include singer Johnny Costa/Johnny Costello; a former Liberace singer, Mario Valenti, and Beverly Hills lawyer Mickey Miller. .Who will win the I .a nr* (Page 17 Please)
