AVALON - Bishop James L. Schad, pastor of Maris Stella Church here since 1979, was honored at a special Mass and dinner Sept. 18 commemorating the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Bishop Schad was the principal celebrant of the Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church, Haddon Heights, with Bishop George H. Guilfoyle of Camden delivering the homily. A reception and dinner in Pennsauken followed. Bishop Schad was ordained a priest April 10, 1943, by Bishop Bartholemew J. Eustace at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden. BORN IN Philadelphia, Bishop Schad grew up in Vineland. In 1966, the then Msgr. Schad was appointed as auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Celestine J. Da miano, who was bishop of Camden at the time. As a newly ordained priest, he was first assigned as assistant pastor to Msgr. John J. Henry at Holy Spirit parish, Atlantic City. In July of 1949, be became a chaplain in the U.S. Army and served at FL Jackson in South Carolina with the first infantry division and in West Germany. Returning to the diocese in 1952, Bishop Schad was named assistant pastor at Christ the King parish in Haddonfield. Two years later, the then Fr. Schad became a pastor at St. Anne’s parish, Westville. At that time, the principal mission church of the Westville church was Most Holy Redeemer in Westville Grove. Bishop Schad was named its foun-
ding pastor when it was made an independent parish in 1958. While there, be was appointed a papal chamberlain by Pope Paul VI with the title Reverend Monsignor in 1964. SHORTLY AFTER the announcement of his elevation to the episcopacy, Bishop Schad was named Vicar General of the diocese, a diocesan consuitor and pastor of St. Rose of Lima parish, Haddon Heights. Previously, Bishop Schad had been associate editor of the diocesan newspaper, the Catholic Star Herald from 1953 to 1961.. In December 1966, Bishop Schad was appointed by Archbishop Da-
Rally Day At 1st UMC
WILDWOOD CREST - Sunday is Rally Day at First United Methodist Church, with morning worship at 9:30 a.m. and the Sunday School leading in the worship service. There will be a gospel hymn sing and the Bible message by the pastor. Sunday School is at 10:45 a.m. with classes for all ages.
