DUNKED — Middle Township Committee member Pat Peterson, who’s seeking reeiection this year, and Middle Township mayor Michael J. Voil were among politicians dunked in the water by sharp-eyed, strongarmed baseball throwers at the Wings ’N Water Festival last weekend. Republican Peterson and Democrat Voll were only dunked waist-deep, to the disappointment of the public.

Wildwoods to Host 42,000 Shriners / yfu

WILDWOOD — Shriners from 22 East Coast temples qre converging on the resort from land, sea and air this week for the MidAtlantic Shrine Convention. Businesses have been hiring off-season help to cater to the 42,000 Shriners who abandoned their Virginia Beach convention site to meet, party, and parade down Atlantic Avenue Saturday. That extravagana begins at 10 a.m. at l*th Street. Besides the thousands of Shrine marchers, the parade will include a dozen camels, 50 Arabian horses, motorcycle formations, antique cars, clowns, floats,

college bands, cheerleaders, chanters, seven string bands and an aerial display of vintage planes. The festivities begin Friday at 11 a.m. when the conventioneers host a free band competition at the Boardwalk Band shell on Montgomery Avenue. The convention concludes Sunday with a banquet at Ed Zaberer’s Restaurant, Anglesea. According to Tom Parsons, executive director of the local motel association, the governor of Virginia is in a tizzy over the loss of the lucrative convention. WILDWOOD ALREADY HOSTS the Tall Cedars of

North America, the New Jersey Grand Lodge of Masons, the Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls. Parsons believes the resort could become the Masonic convention capital of the East Coast if the MidAtlantic Shriners are shown hospitality, courtesy and fair prices. The National Shrine Convention may also select Wildwood in the future if the Mid-Atlantic Shrine is given a good reception here, he observed. Delegates to the national convention in Denver, Colo., were obliged to stay as far away as 200 miles from that city because of the sparsity of hotel and

motel rooms in the vicinity. With a density of 4,400 rooms per square-mile in the resort and thousands of rooms or campsite nearby, national delegates would not have to stay farther than Cherry Hill if they decided to hold future conventions in Wildwood, Parsons explained. WHY DID THE MidAtlantic Shriners decide to relocate their convention from Virginia? They were reportedly disenchanted with antiquated facilities at Virginia Beach and its reputed high crime. One of the Tall Cedars complained that his Virginia Beach motel room was burglarized three

times during conventions in that resort. Parsons predicts an increasing dependence on convention trade, particularly in May, June, the latter part of August, and September. Next spring, he noted, Shriners vote on their convention sites from 1987 onward. With steady competition from other resorts, — including the World's Fair in New Orleans and the Olympics in Los Angeles next year, — Wildwood must make its bid for the conventioneers by building a reputation as a hospitable haven now, Parsons concluded.

Endorses Peterson ''AVALON - State v Assemblyman Guy F. Muziani endorsed incumbent GOP candidate Pat Peterson for Middle Township Committee during a ‘‘Reelect Pat Peterson Night" at county GOP chairman Philip A. Matalucci’s Side Street Speakeasy Friday night. Matalucci urged more than 150 guests to work on Peterson’s behalf to help defend her committee seat from Democratic challenger Jim Alexis. Peterson promised supporters to "continue to do her best and to act as the watch dog for the male, Democratically-controlled township committee."
