Rhino Records (1201 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA. 90404) continues to be one of the most productive independent labels in the States. They should also be praised for having one of the finest reissue programs of any label, and it shows no sign of letting up. They've recently put back into circulation the early, hard to find hits Jerry Lee Lewis recorded for Memphis' Sun label. Along with Elvis Presley, Chock Berry, Buddy Holly, and Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis was responsible for the wild early days of rock and roll. Lewis’ life has always—even to this day—been surrounded by controversy, but one thing is clearly obvious from listening to Original Sun Greatest Hits is that there are few rockers who put els much emotion into their vocals or playing. Jerry Lee Lewis attacks his piano in a frantic, demented style, banging on the keys as if they were meant to be destroyed. As a vocalist, his sly, cool style makes great songs such as “Whole Lotta Shakin Coin On,” “Great Balls of Fire.” and
"Breathless" even better. This early material is why Lewis is considered in rock circles to be a legend, but he’s still cranking out powerhouse rock and roll and heartfelt country music. Jerry Lee Lewis is showing no signs of letting up. Cherish this record as it's valuable part of his legacy. Richard Barone and James Mastro play guitar in the critically acclaimed band The Bongos, yet they took time from their busy lifestyle to do a joint project, titled Nuts And Bolts (Passport). Each one gets a side to showcase material they didn't feel fit the style of the Bongos, and, for the most part, this is a highly enjoyable effort. Musically, much of this is acousticbased rock. The songs are simple, direct, and are per formed by two musicians who are obviously having a good time. A couple of times things get bogged down, but, overall, Barone and Mastro have come up with a sure-fire winner. Here’s hoping they can continue with the Bongos and as a duo as both parties are making music worth hearing.
