Led by Eva Kiebach, who is the USTTA Press Officer for Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the editor of the trade publication “Destination USA”, the travel writers are part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of German immigration to the United States. They are touring the country gathering information for stories to include in the travel editions of their respective papers. City officials will greet the German writers at 9:30 a.m. at the Emlen Physick Estate. The group will tour the Physick Estate and stroll through the town before departing at 11 a.m.
COURT HOUSE - Frost does not have to be the end of eating fresh tomatoes from your garden. Usually when frost is forecast, there are lots of fruits left .on tomato plants, and you can use one of two methods to ripen them indoors, according to Larry Newbold, county agricultural agent. 'Hie first we will call the whole plant method. Pull the plant from the ground, leaving the tomatoes on the vines. Take the plant to your cool basement and hang it upside down. If you have a number of plants it is possible to tie eight or ten vines together and then hang them. The mature green fruits will ripen while still attached to the plant. The smaller, immature fruits may eventually turn red, but they may have a bitter taste. It is not unusual for plants pulled before early October frosts to continue ripening fruits well into December. Imagine a salad at your Thanksgiving dinner made with your home grown tomatoes. THE OTHER METHOD is to pick the fruits before

frost and bring them to a place indoors where the temperature range is 60 degrees to 70 degrees F. the best range for ripening. At temperatures below 55 degrees F. the tomato flavor will not be good, which is why tomatoes stored in the refrigerator for more than two or three days have poor flavor. Temperatures above 80 degrees F. also result in less desirable flavor and poor color; at this high -temperature, too, there is likely to be more decay. According to Newbold, the individual fruits should be laid out in a single layer on a dry surface. Do not leave the fruits in a box or basket, which would risk too rapid ripening, decay and possible bruising. One diseased fruit, like the bad apple in the barrel, can spoil all the good ones. Moderate light hastens ripening, but too much sunlight retards development of normal, all-over color. In total darkness ripening will be retarded. The term mature green tomato may need explaining. This refers to fruits that have reached mature size and, if cut in half, would show the gel and seeds already formed. The fruit just has not started to turn color, which it will do indoors when given the proper conditions.
