This Artisan Puts Sparkle into Work
COLD SPRING - Colorful tulips, floral reminders of Cape May’s Dutch origins, sparkle in the sunlight where the stained glass artisan, Debbie Federici, works in Historic Cold Spring Village. "When my mother leased this shop here taro years ago, i took three \weeks of classes to learn how to make stained glass." says Debbie, who produces most of the decorative articles in' the Spicer Learning House at the Village Before that, she, her mother, and grandmother had been needlecrafters. Since that time, she has completed 20 stained glass commissions in addition to liyndreds of other items for sale in the shop. “Nearly all of my commissions have been for windows in Cape May's Victorian homes, for transoms and roqjn or banging dividers," she explains. She also makes window hangings, which be hung behind win- ' dowrfor a rainbow effect. "I WORK WITH the customer for an idea of color preference, size and theme of each piece, then I Dry Named Hunt’s Pres. draw a sketch and when the customer approves, I can begin the work ." She says a favorite decorative stained glass work in her shop is a reproduction of a Victorian panel with an oval bevel center where an etching chn feature the owner's initials. She. charges by size and number of cuts for each glass work A freshman at Glass boro State College this month. She is a business major. Her goal is to open her own business, but she is not sure what she will sell. Debbie lives with her parents, Dorothy and Victor Federici, in Chews Landing, near Cherry Hill. She has been working after high school to produce stained glass for summer sale in the Cold Spring Village shop. Both her parents make pieces also, but they have full time jobs so that she has become the accomplished artisan of the family. SHE SAYS THAT the very small suncatcher pieces such as clovers, sailboats, seagulls, cardinals and bluejays are very popular. Her most unusual work was a threemasted tall ship. The Cape May tulip theme has led to her production of tulips as a stained glass favorite with tourists. “Because of college obligations this year, we won’t be continuing the shop here in 1984," says Debbie, "so we are having a sale from now until the Village closes for the season Oct. 2.1 will be here only on weekends since I am in school, but we can take orders in the shop here if people want to call 884-1960. After that, you’ll have to call (609 ) 783-2064, which is home in Chews Landing. I will continue to take commissions but won’t be able to give the time to produce in quantity with the college schedule of studies."
